Grade 8 Israel Adventure!
|
It's now been 5 days since the Grade 8 students and staff members departed for Israel. The halls of King David are eerily quiet, and updates so far reveal that all is well in the Land of Milk and Honey!
"As I sit in my room typing I can hear the joyous noises made by over-tired kids still having no shortage of fun outside playing in the warm night air."
~ Russ Klein, Head of School
Below are excerpts from Mr Klein's daily accounts from Israel. Each day parents receive a detailed synopsis of the day's adventures.
Everything has gone splendidly so far! After arriving at Ben Gurion Airport we sailed through customs and changed money, had a little rugelach and water and then boarded the bus to go see the Bahai Gardens in Haifa. Let me tell you, 37 kids and 6 adults makes for a rather full bus! It was a beautiful afternoon, and we did manage to gather the troops for a group photo.
After leaving the Gardens we had an hour or so drive with our fading troops to the Golan town of Katzrin where we watched an Imax type movie overview of the Golan region and had a lesson on the history of the Golan (which had been supported in their Jewish History studies with Ms. Braude). This was followed by more candy and chocolate milk shopping! It was then nearly 7pm when we finally arrived at the Kibbutz, dropped off our bags and headed up for dinner.
Over the last 3 days, along with our Israeli cousins (soon to be brothers and sisters no doubt), we have made our way to the Sea of Galilee where a little ways from the Kineret, lies Hamat Gader. This is a sprawling Hot Springs with warm mineral water baths - really huge, gorgeous pools with a little sulfurous odor (but not too bad). Also, we've visited the Tel Dan Nature Reserve. It was a beautiful place and we had a long walk - some of it was like a hike - but it was spectacular.
The kids have been wonderful, our jet lag is finally dissipating, and the weather has been glorious. We are so proud of our Grade 8's!
Stay tuned for more next week...

KDHS Graphic Novels
|
In Mrs. Hart's English 11 and Creative Writing 12 classes, students embarked on a multi-week unit on Graphic Novels. The unit began with local graphic novelist, Jose Menjivar teaching us the history and techniques behind graphic novels. Students explored the fundamentals of how to support a personal narrative both structurally and visually. Jose Menjivar also joined our students for our visit to the Vancouver Art Gallery's Art Spiegelman: CO-Mix exhibit.
The exhibit and accompanying workshop were an outstanding experience. At CO-Mix, students learned about the controversial history of Spiegelmen's early, underground work as well as his personal journey to write the Pulitzer prize winning graphic novel, Maus about his father's experience surviving the Holocaust. As an introduction to memoir and graphic novels, we read Thompson's Blankets as a foundational text off which we will analyze and structure our own work. As a culminating project, students wrote, designed and drew their own personal memoirs in graphic novel form.

Ultimate Frisbee Tournament
|
On Wednesday, Coach Hart and the King David Co-ed Ultimate Frisbee team participated in GVISAA tournament at Trillium Park. Aside from our two Grade 8 players who are in Israel, everyone joined in for the sunny day of Ultimate play. Spirit Awards went to Shmuly T, Deborah H, Jacob P, Janine N, Kira S, Benny N, and Adina L! We advanced into the playoff rounds and placed 6th overall. The collective comradery, high energy, and spirited sportsmanship were really a pleasure to see.

Our last 4 home games are Monday April 22nd, Monday April 29th, Tuesday April 30th and Wednesday May 6th at South Memorial Turf Park (43rd and Prince Albert) with a 3:30pm kick off games will finish around 5pm.
