Grade 8 Art Students Manhole Cover Designs
|
Following discussions about local water use, sewage treatment and grey water, Grade 8 Art students created original designs for the storm and sanitary sewer covers scattered throughout the city. These designs will be entered as part of the City of Vancouver's IRONCLAD competition, inviting artists to design new 'manhole' covers, as part of the city-wide project to separate storm and sanitary sewers. Students drew a series of options, selected one to be refined and enlarged, and then created a rubber block to create a pattern using block printing. Each student submitted a black and white print to the city for consideration; coloured prints are on display in the school. Hundreds of submissions, from the general public and possibly our students, will be displayed at the Interurban Gallery (1 East Hastings Street) from Tuesday May 28th to Saturday June 8th, 2013.

Audiences across North America have been entertained by the outrageous Jewish humour of Bryan Fogel. Fogel's brainchild,
Jewtopia, is one of the most successful Off-Broadway comedies of all time, prompting the New York Times to hail it as "Unstoppable! One of the biggest and most improbable hits!"
 | |
First Row (L-R): Rita Wilson, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Camryn Manheim, Tom Arnold, Jon Lovitz, Rachel Fox Second Row (l-R) Bryan Fogel, Lin Shaye
|
The story captures the essence of what it means to be an ethnic minority, while incorporating the timeless Jewish tradition of laughing at one's self. Fogel weaves together stand-up comedy, storytelling, audience participation, excerpts from his book, and clips from his upcoming film to create a one-of-a-kind event. Fogel's Off-Broadway success inspired his book Jewtopia: The Chosen Book for the Chosen People, one of the best-selling Jewish humour books of all time.

Gracias from the Children in Occopata!
|
The fun lunchtime Fiesta put on by our Grade 11 Spanish class raised enough money to purchase five book-filled traveling backpacks to promote literacy amongst the children in the younger elementary classes in a school in the rural village of Occopata! Watch the video of Senora Lawrence delivering them over the Pesach break.
