Terry Small - A Big Success
|
"Successful studying is all about the right strategy", says Terry Small. Through a combination of valuable information, magic tricks, interesting props, and much much more, Terry Small kept us all completely alert, inspired, and informed throughout his presentation and left us wanting more! Thanks to PAC for bringing Terry to us (PAC will be looking into bringing Terry back next year). | | With a model of the brain in hand, Terry Small keeps the students engaged and learning |
Click here for some of the highly useful techniques that Terry shared with us. Stay tuned for more!

Pi Day!
|
On Thursday, March 14th, King David celebrated Pi Day! This year, our Pi day contest involved creating a poem, story or video about Pi. Congratulations to Elias, Grade 11, our 2013 Pi Day Contest winner of an iPad and to our runner-up, Lis, Grade 8, for her Pi video! Many students enjoyed the brain teaser challenge and the winner of the Brain Teaser Contest this year was Artium, Grade 11. Thank you to PAC for providing us with yummy pies (and whipped cream!!) at lunch and to the Shiff Family and Inflection Management Inc. for the generous iPad donation. Great fun all around!

Experiential Learning in Biology 12!
|
| Ms. Baloun, Abby, Liza and Mijal observe closely as Solly blows air into the lungs of a cow |
This week in Biology 12, we learned about the respiratory system. To help us visualize the close relationship between the lungs and the heart we dissected a cow pluck - the still attached heart, lungs and trachea of a cow. Watching the lungs inflate was an incredible experience! We were also fascinated by the variety of textures of the different tissues - the trachea was hard like a PVC pipe, while the lungs were so soft and spongy. We were so amazed by it, that we invited other students and teachers to come take a look and then explained to them how all the parts work together.
"It was really fun to experience learning with the Biology 12 students as they explored the innards of a cow." Lu Winters, King David School Counsellor

| Senora Lawrence, Eden, Sari, Kira and Lindsay, Grade 11, enjoying Spanish Karaoke! |
The fun lunchtime Fiesta raised enough money to purchase five book-filled traveling backpacks to promote literacy amongst the children in the younger elementary classes in a school in the rural village of Occopata! Senora Lawrence is on her way to Peru to deliver them personally!

Connecting to the Source
|
This term we learned to cite and write research papers in Social Studies 9. When an article from Harvard that I was reading did not give me proper citation information, my teacher Mrs.Hart challenged me to e-mail one of the authors. I was skeptical, but went ahead and sent an email. To my surprise, I received a response that helped me cite the paper. They also sent me a copy of their book with a hand written letter! I am so glad Mrs. Hart challenged me to contact them, it really paid off! ~ Rachel, Grade 9

Chag Pesach Sameach!
|
Matzah is a schizophrenic bread. Everybody knows why we eat matzah at the Seder. In the Haggadah we quote the verse in the Torah from Parshat Bo, "[The Jews] baked the dough that they had brought out of Egypt into (unleavened) matzah cakes, since it had not risen. They had been driven out of Egypt and could not delay" (Exodus 12:39). In other words, the Jews left Egypt in a such hurry and had no time to let their dough rise. So they ended up with flat matzahs. We eat matzah at the Seder to taste the bread of freedom that our ancestors ate when they cleared out of Egypt. Right?
We wish you a meaningful, growth-filled Passover!
