Take a Bow, Cast and Crew!
After months of hard work and rehearsing, this week the King David Drama and Music departments presented their own rendition of The Wedding Singer! The story follows wedding singer Robbie Hart (played by Izzy, Grade 10) who is ultimately left at the altar at his own wedding. He falls in love with a waitress named Julia (played by Claire, Grade 12 ), who is engaged to a stockbroker named Glen (played by Matty, Grade 9). With 1980s inspired song and dance numbers, brightly colored sets and costumes, high energy performances, and cameos from pop icons Tina Turner (played by Jared, Grade 10) and Cyndi Lauper (played by Jillian, Grade 9), the play put a smile on everyone's face and had the crowd on its feet!

Thank you to the cast and crew, King David Wedding Singer Band, teachers and parents for all their hard work!

Acts of Chesed Inspire

Last week's issue of the Jewish Independent featured an article inspired by King David's RAC Week:

"King David High School and the Vancouver Canucks have something in common. Both organizations have mental health awareness campaigns as a direct result of losing a special member of their "team" to suicide. In November 2010, beloved KDHS alumnus Gabrielle Isserow succumbed to severe depression. Several months later, Canucks team member Rick Rypien, known as an enforcer for the Canucks, ended his more than decade long struggle with depression by taking his own life. From both of these tragedies has sprung a desire in the school and on the team to change the way society views and deals with mental health issues. Two programs have emerged as a result."

RAC Week Celebration of Kindness at King David

To all the wonderful faculty, staff, administrators, board members, students and parents of King David High School,

It is with heartfelt gratitude that we send this note of thanks for the time, effort and love all of you extended to make February's Random Act of Chesed (RAC) week such a success.

We thank you for remembering our beautiful daughter Gabrielle and for honouring her legacy in such a beautiful way. Gabi recognized that in giving, she was the one receiving and the goals of RAC week beautifully reflect the values she embraced so clearly.

We would also like to recognize the monumental efforts of Shoshana Burton and wish to thank Vancouver Talmud Torah and Richmond Jewish Day School for their participation.
Gabrielle loved King David High School, we feel blessed that this very special school has chosen to remember our daughter in this most profound way.

With love
Andrea, Dan and Claudia Isserow

Learning About the Brain!

Psychology students, Rachel, Lindsay and Nicole, Grade 11,  with their model of the brain

In Psychology class, we created a representation of the brain either on poster board, a PowerPoint or by creating a model. This is a picture of one of the models made by Lindsay, Nicole and Rachel, Grade 11. The two halves of the brain resemble the two hemispheres. The images play on words for the different parts of the brain. For example, a motorcycle was used to represent "motor skills". Creating a visual representation of the brain helped us to more fully understand the brain and how it functions as a unit.

Vote and Help our Green Team Win!
Our environment club has been working hard all year to enter Science World's annual environmental action contest. We have set up a composting program, participated in BC's shoreline clean-up and started an electronics recycling program.

Watch the amazing video
GREEN, GREEN BABY
created by Jacob, Grade 12

It only takes a minute to register and every vote counts! We could win $1000 that will help us sustain and support further environmental action projects at King David.

Thanks for your support!

King David Delegation at Model UN!

Nicole, Rachel, Jenna, Sari and Benny in Montreal

This year King David had a group of five enthusiastic delegates representing our school at the 2013 Jewish-Canadian Youth Model United Nations Conference in Montreal, Quebec. The delegates all researched their assigned countries and were prepared to discuss and debate important world issues ranging from improved access to clean water to the international stance on cyber-terrorism. They went into the conference with little time to fully prepare, following their busy school schedules and the end of Term 2 and we all learned a great deal about the issues as well as the Model UN conference format itself. I was very impressed with our students as they represented themselves and our school with pride, maturity and always with a good sense of humour. The trip was an excellent opportunity to engage in important world issues, meet and connect with other members of the Jewish community and have a lot of fun in the beautiful city of Montreal.
