RAC Week
King David has a long history of community service, from Mitzvah Days to ongoing volunteering in the Downtown Eastside, to working with our partners within the Jewish community.

This year we implemented the components of service learning which include learning, action, reflection and demonstration and this week our tradition of service and learning came together in a meaningful way.

We gave:
*    Our time and service to local organizations
*    Inspire our younger partner school peers at RJDS and
      VTT
*    Support to our fellow students

We received:
*    Guidance from community leaders
*    Lunches and support from our amazing PAC parents
*    Encouragement and support from all the adults in the school
*    Warm welcomes and sincere appreciation from the community
     organizations

None of this would have been possible without the vision of Shoshi Burton and Sharon Dwek and a committee of dedicated students, parents and teachers. A special thank you to Andi Isserow, Lucie Levy-Spack, Esther Mogyoros, Alana Karsunsky, Juleen Axler, Sandy Laurie, Ellen Rappaport and Julie Kuchinsky who spent many hours organizing, feeding and driving!

Exploratory Surgery?
"In Biology 12,  we have been studying the circulatory system, including the path of blood through the heart and the anatomy of the heart.

We dissected a pig heart. It was very interesting because of how similar the pig heart is to ours. Pig heart valves were even used to replace damaged human valves. We learned a lot."

Biology 12 Students Learn at UBC
Recently, we had the privilege of learning from graduate students at UBC. The graduate students led us in performing a lab which separated our DNA profile by gel electrophoresis. We very much enjoyed performing the lab and applying the knowledge we learned in class to the experiment. The graduate students also explained other fields of research they were studying. This included research into the hereditary types of stomach cancer and how nutrition during pregnancy may affect one's child's susceptibility to obesity.

Happy Purim!
"There is one people scattered and dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom..."
                                          -Esther 3:8

The evil Haman used these words to convince King Achashverosh to destroy theJewish people. His argument emphasized "scattered and dispersed," to imply that the Jewish people were a fragmented and divided people, and thus open to attack.

The Jewish response to repair this for all time, was to create four mitzvot that everyone involves themselves with on Purim: reading the Megillah, making a drinking party (Mishtah), giving money to the needy (Matanot L'Evyonim), and sending food gifts to friends and neighbors (Mishloach Manot). These four mitzvot foster a sense of "Achdut", meaning unity, within the Jewish community.

Way to go King David Lions!
For the first time in school history, the King David High School Lions are the Junior Boys Greater Vancouver Independent School Athletics Association (GVISAA) Basketball Champions!  The Junior Boys concluded a perfect 8-0 regular season with victories over Bodwell, West Point Grey Academy and St. Johns to win the championship trophy.Special Congratulations to Max who was named a 1st team GVISAA Junior Boys All Star and to Tal who was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

We are all very proud of the boys for their hard work this year especially in terms of discipline, competitive spirit, ruach and sportsmanship throughout both the regular season and playoffs.

"This is something the boys will never forget and I am so proud to be part of this amazing accomplishment and to be a King David Lion who is passionate about demonstrating PRIDE. It has been a phenomenal three year journey to get to this point and I am so excited for all of the players," said Coach Amram.

A special thanks to all of the parents for their incredible support over the past season (including singing during the final game). We couldn't have done as well without all of your support!

The JFGV Annual High School Debates
Jewish Federation presented its Annual High School Debate Night on Wednesday, February 20th. The event brought high school students together to present, defend and cross-examine on topics of current interest to the Jewish community. The debates provide youth the opportunity to explore ideas related to Israel and Jewish life, and to work together on teams. We would like to congratulate all King David students who participated in the Debates and give a Mazel Tov to the following King David teams who debated their way to victory!

Gonna Live and Die N-F-T-Y!
On Valentine's Day, I embarked on a five-day adventure filled with massive amounts of Judaism, friendship, education, passion, love, and laughter. This was an adventure that I spent the last two years counting down to, and it's hard to believe that it is now an experience that I can say I have had. This past Thursday, I travelled to Los Angeles for the North American Federation of Temple Youth's (NFTY) Convention.

Over the course of the five-day convention, I participated in several workshops relating to life after high school, influence, responsibility, and leadership. I was given the opportunity to listen to speakers such as Talia Leman of Random Kid, Marc Elliot of What Makes You Tic?, and actor Joshua Malina, an avid supporter of an organization called Mazon. These speakers were beyond inspirational, and I learned so much.
