A Week of Chanukah Celebrations!

The week began at 8am on Monday with all King David teachers stationed at the school entrance where they welcomed students by showering them with gelt (gold chocolate coins).

The tradition for the gold coins comes from the name of Chanukah which shares the same root as Hinuch or "Education." While the Greeks tried to end Jewish education, the Jews fought so their children would be able to study Torah freely. To encourage study, it became tradition for people to give a little money (gelt) to the poor so they could afford to learn and as a reward to children who were diligent with their studies.

At the end of day, the school community gathered together in the atrium for the lighting the Chanukiah (menorah). This was done by Student Council Grade representatives. This year, the Chanukiah we are lighting is made of boxes. In the boxes students have placed the socks, toiletries, towels, scarves and mittens that we are collecting for our neighbours on the Downtown Eastside. Food and music, reflecting the holiday, were eaten after the lighting of the Chanukiah.

Israeli Politics 101!
In January, Israelis will go to the polls to elect a new government. The Grade 12 Israel Advocacy class received an introduction to Israeli politics by our Development Director, Sharon Dwek. Sharon received her law degree in Israel. She gave them an overview of the political system, the governing documents of Israel's constitution and discussed the major issues to be decided in this election. The students will be following the news to keep up with the changing faces and party names in Israeli politics.
Sharon shared information about the Israeli election process
before the dialogue began.
Bloggers Choice Awards!

"It's creative and fun and appeals to our generation. I like being able to decorate my blog and express myself."

                                                ~  Bella, Grade 9

This year, Ms. Ralph's English classes are using online blogs. Ms. Ralph's blog, tilted Merrymaking, is the meeting place of all English 9 and 12 students, who have their own individual blog link listed there. Students created their own Wordpress blog and customized it to suit their personal style. All the blogs are updated regularly with posts about topics covered in class. Blogging is an excellent way to improve literacy skills, and it also allows for collaboration between students, as they read and comment on each others' writing. Other benefits include a sense of classroom community, ICT skills, and self-confidence in a safe online space. Each term, the classes will be voting for their favourite peer blog. The winners of the Term 1 'Blogger's Choice' Awards were Ally and Izzy in Grade 9, and Shayne in Grade 12. Well done!

"I like being able to check other peoples' ideas and we can all share our learning."

Winter in Winnipeg!
This week, Russ Klein (Head of School), Debbie Appelbaum (Director of Admissions and Communication) and Shoshi Burton
-34 Degrees and we ventured out for dinner!
(Director of Jewish Life and Events) headed to the cold of Winnipeg to spend two days in the warmth of Gray Academy. We felt so welcome and comfortable in the school and had the opportunity for many conversations relating to the work we are all doing to provide our students with an excellent Jewish education. We came back excited and feeling good about both schools. It was also evident that there is no difference at all in our school missions and in the wonderful work that we are doing for students in both our Jewish communities.

Alumni News!
This week's interview profiles Brad Michelson, who graduated from King David in 2008, and is currently running his own business!
Brad Michelson graduates from the
University of Victoria

Kira and Rachel, Grade 11

What is your fondest memory of King David?

Brad: "I don't know if I have one memory in particular that I like to look back on. It was more the experience in general. We had one of the bigger graduating classes in the last decade, and despite our size, we were a pretty tight-knit group. The majority of us went to elementary school together. There are some people in my class that I haven't seen since the summer following our graduation. But the thing with our grade is that no matter how long it's been since we last saw each other, it doesn't feel like it's been that long. We pick up where we left off. So, I guess to answer the question; what I look back fondly on is the bond my graduating class shares. It's something that is kind of hard to put into words."
