We Stand with Israel
|
Today we express solidarity with Israel and support for the military actions that are underway to defend innocent lives along Israel's southern border. In light of recent events we gave students an opportunity to say a prayer for our brothers and sisters in Israel, its soldiers defending them, and for the Canadian government for its continued support.
The King David Student Council has organized a non-uniform day on November 20th to raise funds for Magen David Adom. Students are asked to bring i n a minimum of $2 donation (community donations accepted).

We Remember!
|
Kristallnacht
In Mrs. Braude's Jewish History class we were discussing what would make this Kristallnacht meaningful and memorable for anyone who came into our school. Tal came up with the idea of drawing broken glass on the doors for Kristallnacht. All the major glass doors and windows of the school were made to look broken and shattered. That way, anyone who came in or walked around King David would be instantly visually reminded of that night and the horrors that followed. ~ Isaac and Tal, Grade 10
 | | Alex, Grade 10, implements Tal's idea. | Remembrance Day
King David students came together to remember and commemorate members of the armed forces. The school-wide assembly was capably led by Grade 11 and 12 students. This year we were reminded to stop for 2 minutes of silence at 11am on November 11th. The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month marks the end of the first world war in the United Kingdom and this date and time became Remembrance Day in commonwealth countries.

Yitzhak Rabin
Yitzhak Rabin's assassination is a tragic event, and our duty is to learn from it and draw conclusions about our life in the present. For that reason the "זָכ֕וֹר Exhibit", the Exhibit of Remembrance, was created by Habonim Dror. Diana Lerner, a King David alum, returned to King David to share the exhibit with students. She is affiliated with Habonim Dror and their group is using this exhibition to raise awareness about Rabin, in particular his efforts to find a peaceful solution in the Middle East. In the conversation, they also included other examples of leaders like Anwar Sadat and Ghandi, who tried to bring peace to their countries and paid the ultimate price. | | Diana Lerner leads a dialogue about Yitchak Rabin |

We Learn
|
On Thursday, the Counselling Program at King David offered the Grade 8 students a SOLOS workshop which focussed on "Your Life Online".
The Grade 8 students LOVED the SOLOS presentation. Merlyn (the Executive Director of SOLOS) is a dynamic and frank speaker and she captivated the students with her current information and videos. There was a lot of contribution from the students...and even though the bell rang at the end of the day, the students wanted more. HUGE success!
~ Lu Winters, Counsellor
Through a powerful visual presentation the students were asked to think about:
- Your identities online -- are they private or public?
- How public is your Facebook and other online data?
- Online content is permanent.
- What may be consequences in the future from data you post now?
- What can others find out about you online?
- Who might be looking at your information online?
- Definitions of online harassment.
- Descriptions of and number of youth affected (CA statistics) by online harassment.
- How and where online harassment happens.
- How harassment is different online?
- How to capture information if you are cyber-bullied.
Students are encouraged to:
- Make values-based decisions about how they act online.
- Take online harassment seriously.
- Report online harassment (whether it happens to them or others).
- Participate online as positive cyber-citizens.
The conversation was animated as students shared their experiences and explored the potential ramifications of information they post online.

We Perform!
|
Last week the newest KDHS Drama students performed in their first public show! The Grade 8 class treated a Grade 9 audience to their Greek Theatre performances, retelling classic Greek Tragedies such as Medea and Orpheus. In groups they wrote their own scripts and directed their own dramatic scenes with a focus on mood, space and tension. The show was extremely comedic, which is interesting considering the topic of study was 'tragedy'! Well done to the latest Drama star's of King David! Melanie Ralph, Drama Teacher "It was really cool using the costumes in the Drama room and the performances were so crazy and funny!!" ~ Michelle, Grade 8
