Random Kid
Greatness happens when we make room for others... this is the lesson our community learned on Tuesday from Talia Leman, a 17 year old girl, who was the keynote speaker at Federation's Women's Philanthropy event, Choices.

In the morning Talia addressed our King David students in addition to students from RJDS, VHA, and VTT. Talia shared with them her journey as one RANDOM KID. As a 10 year old, she mobilized a national network of concerned kids, ultimately raising $10 million for hurricane relief almost overnight which put them in the same league as some of the country's biggest corporations.

"We don't have to know how. We can just head in that direction and we will get there. And THAT is both the secret and the magic behind The Power of ANYone"  said Talia.

Sophie, Grade 8, wrote in her creative writing class, "Talia spoke to us about the power of youth. About how great things are accidental and that the smallest of details can lead to great things. This reminded me of books where the smallest detail you often pay no attention to, is the vital part. It got me thinking about how many small things I do, like a remark, an action, a choice, can impact not only me but others around me so greatly?!  How can I do these small things that inspire someone to do something extraordinary without knowing what I need to do? I realized I can't.  All I can do is what I believe is right - volunteer, help around my community, collect money for charity, be kind to people, be thoughtful, get out there and make mistakes because these mistakes can end up being a critical part of a positive change."

Thank you to Michelle Pullan, JFGV Director Women's Philanthropy,
and Choices Co-chairs, Natalie Rosengarten, Sigal Mathews and Shawna Merkur, for bringing this opportunity to King David.

The Impact of the US Elections

On Wednesday, November 7th, less than 24 hours after the results of the U.S. presidential elections, Peter Klein, journalist, King David parent and CBS producer of 60 Minutes shared with us with his knowledge about, and thoughts on, the results of the U.S. elections. Peter touched upon the many issues debated in this election from climate change, energy prices, gay marriage, to the economy and health care. The issue of universal and socialized health care was extensively discussed as the Canadians in the room struggled to understand how the basic rights of healthcare can determine an election.

On the Israel front, Peter reported that the U.S. will continue to be a strong ally of Israel regardless of who is in the White House. The Obama administration has made a political decision not to share with the public their diplomatic efforts with respect to Iran's nuclear abilities. This political calculation proved to pay off as Obama won 70% of the Jewish vote despite the efforts of Casino businessman, Sheldon Adleson, who poured millions of dollars into the Republican campaigns for candidates in swing States. The evening was an engaging and thoughtful conversation about values, rights and the power of money.

and Social Studies teacher

Rain Doesn't Slow Us Down!
Last week Ms. Yaxley's Grade 9/10 Girls PE class showed us all that the rain can't stop you from working out!  The class transformed the Drama room into an indoor fitness circuit, with activities ranging from push-ups to ladder-drills to medicine ball exercises, complete with loud work-out music to motivate the girls.  It was an excellent afternoon, and helped us all forget about the grey skies outside!

"The fitness circuit was so hard but I had a really great time!"

 Hana and Bella work out
King David has a Book Club
Book club began with a bang! Our club is filled with eager readers and never ending opinions, guaranteeing our lunch hour to be a fun-filled venture. We began with finding everyone a book of their liking. We listed our favourite titles and made an educated decision on a book we found suitable. At our next meeting, we shared a favourite passage from our book, inspiring our members to check out other books.

"Book club is the place to be on Monday during lunch hour. You are free to drop in as you please, everyone is welcome!"
~  Bella, Grade 9, Book Club Founder

The Book Club meets for the first time
