Grade 8 Family Shabbat Dinner was Remarkable!
"The family Shabbat dinner at King David was a remarkable event showcasing the comraderie amongst the students and the students' beautiful poetry readings. As grandparents and community members who were very involved with the formation of King David, we are thrilled to see the school and its values come together in such a meaningful way."
       ~ Lola and Norman Pawer,
Proud grandparents of Jacob, Grade 12, Jordan and  Matan, Grade 8

Throughout September and much of October, Grade 8 students  prepared for a night of poetry in anticipation of the Grade 8 Shabbat dinner. The theme of their poetry and of the evening was "Beginnings". Students explored what beginnings meant to them, and the various ways we see or experience new beginnings in our lives, whether these beginnings are experienced within or outside of us. To prepare, students read and discussed various poems, both historical and contemporary, and were encouraged to go beyond any boundaries of formulaic poetry. They also viewed videos of various poetry performances, included among them Slam Poets, Beat Poets, and contestants on the Poetry in Voice website which features a poetry recitation contest where students from across Canada compete. The students wrote meaningful poems, and recited their works with attention to tone and to dramatic emphasis. This sharing of poems about beginnings related to the spirit of Shabbat, a time when we reflect, often in verse, to celebrate the Sabbath: what has come before us, where we are for the moment, and where we are headed as we begin a new week.

History Came to Life in Room 220
Last week, Grade 9 Social Studies hosted historical figures from as far away as 15th century Europe. Our classroom welcomed figures such as witch hunter general, Matthew Hopkins, revolutionary Oliver Cromwell, religious leader, Martin Luther and many more. The students were assigned an individual historical figure for the project and each student was responsible for researching his or her historical figure and creating a summary profile for the rest of the class. With profiles in hand, students dressed up in costumes and poised thoughtful questions to their classmates about bigger historical questions such as the dangers of absolute power and role of religious tensions in Parliament.
It was such fun to see a midwife accused of witchcraft challenge her accuser!

Teachers as Learners

On Thursday, our King David faculty participated in a morning of professional development facilitated by Noël Janis-Norton. Noël, founder and director of The New Learning Centre in London, is a learning and behaviour specialist with more than 40 years of experience helping parents and teachers on both sides of the Atlantic. Through her innovative Calmer, Easier, Happier Parenting and Teaching programs, she has helped hundreds of thousands of parents and teachers learn effective techniques that result in more cooperative, confident, motivated, self-reliant and considerate children both at home and in the classroom.Thank you to the JFGV and King David parent Suzanne Ferera for co-sponsoring this Professional Development Day with King David.

"I am looking forward to applying her concrete, practical methods to create a calmer, easier and happier environment where each student can achieve his or her very best."

                                  ~  Julie Lane, Math Teacher

"Noel Janis-Norton has helped us use language differently. By noticing and verbally describing the positives that our students are doing, we help them hear and internalize the contributions they bring to our school each and every day...which in turn will motivate them to continue to bring those positive attributes, behaviours and skills to the classroom time and time again."

                                  ~  Lu Winters, Counsellor

The Green Team Needs Your Help!
The King David Green Team is running an unwanted electronics drive.  We are collecting batteries, cellphones, iPods, laptops, printers ...you name it!  Wednesday November 7th  will be a non-uniform Green Day, and we are asking students (and their families) to bring in their unwanted electronics. Thank you for your support!

Drama Excursion
This week the Grade 9/10 Drama class went on an excursion to The Waterfront Theatre to see "The Number 14", a production by Axis Physical Theatre Company. "The Number 14" is a Canadian success story in its 20th year of production. The show includes 6 performers who strut, swing, sing and talk their way in and out of adventures aboard Vancouver's #14 bus. The show is based on Commedia Dell'arte and physical theatre, two subjects the class are currently studying.
