Update From the Executive Director

A recent health crisis experienced by an MCC member prompts the encouragement to carry emergency contact info on your person, or at the very least on your iPhone, AT ALL TIMES! Health crises have no timetable, nor are they age-discerning; they can happen in any place, at any time, to anyone. MCC members send healing thoughts to Diane as she recovers and to her family as they offer their love, care and support in the days ahead. MCC members stand ready to offer member to member assistance upon Diane's return home. A CaringBridge site has been set up for health update purposes.

We extend a hearty welcome to new members Camille Burke, Joan Koosman, Diana Gulden and Jose Peris, and Larry and Linda Perlman. We look forward to meeting each one of you and the opportunity to add your varied abilities and interests to the membership!

At its core, MCC is about building community. Shared experiences make it happen. Whether attending events, volunteering together in the neighborhood or providing service to individual members, strong and lasting relationships are built. Please look over the event opportunities below. There are standing weekly offerings as well as some not-to-be-missed events like the Russian Art Tour here or Traffic Zone Artists' Studio Tour, an exclusive opportunity arranged by new member Jim Conaway, here. Registration is required for both!

Information regarding opening day of the Mill City Farmers Market can be found below in Around Town. I apologize for last week's inaccurate opening day info. Hope to see you there!

Mill City Commons: We learn. We share. We engage. We give.

Rendezvous Readers' Book Chat
Wednesday, May 4, 9:30 - 10:30 am
Guthrie Theater Level 5 Express, 818 2nd St S
Join us to discuss Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates. In a series of essays written as a letter to his son, Coates confronts the notion of race in America and how it has shaped American history, many times at the cost of black bodies and lives. Thoughtfully exploring personal and historical events, from his time at Howard University to the Civil War, the author poignantly asks and attempts to answer difficult questions that plague modern society. He explains that the tragic examples of Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin and those killed in South Carolina are the results of a systematically constructed and maintained assault to black people--a structure that includes slavery, mass incarceration and police brutality as part of its foundation. Coates powerfully sums up the terrible history of the subjugation of black people in the United States.

If you'd like to read ahead, June's book is The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan. Have a book suggestion for the Book Chat? Email Barbara Goldner.

Great Decisions: Cuba and the U.S.
Monday, May 9, 7:00 - 8:30 pm
Winslow House Party Room, 100 2nd St SE
The United States announced in December 2014 that, after decades of isolation, it has begun taking major steps to normalize relations with Cuba. The announcement marks a dramatic shift away from a policy that has its roots in one of the darkest moments of the Cold War--the Cuban missile crisis. Although the U.S. trade embargo is unlikely to end any time soon, American and Cuban leaders today are trying to bring a relationship, once defined by antithetical ideologies, into the 21st century. Speaker Gary Prevost is professor of political science and international relations at the College of St. Benedict and St. John's University. He holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Minnesota and is the author of numerous books and articles on revolutionary parties and social movements, including, most recently, "Social Movements and Leftist Governments in Latin America: Confrontation or Co-optation?" Dave and Peggy Lucas host.

Registration on the MCC website is required for Great Decisions members. Sorry, not open to guests; to join the MCC Great Decisions Discussion Group, email the MCC office at info@millcitycommons.org.

Ted Bowman, a family educator and writer, will provide examples of such written or oral legacies and will guide us in beginning to form our own. Susan Hartman and Toni Rosen host.
