Update From the Executive Director

Last Tuesday Happy Hour! Why not drop in for drinks and small bites at the Stone Arch Bar at The Depot this afternoon? It's a great way to connect with MCC friends--or meet some members for the first time. Details are listed below, and remember: All are welcome!

MCC's programming calendar continues to amaze. Bowling proved to be a big hit, so it now is a part of our monthly calendar. Check it out. Great fun! Also, our survey asking members about their interest in learning how to play mah jongg received a huge positive response. As a result, Learn to Play Mah Jongg is now a featured program next month. Space is limited, so MCC members, sign up now--here! Find the fully updated May calendar here.

The Traffic Zone's annual spring art show is just around the corner. This much-anticipated event always draws a big crowd with parking at a premium; BUT, MCC members are being offered an exclusive opportunity by MCC member Jim Conaway to tour the show one hour before it opens to the public. Registration is required, so sign up here, beat the rush and get there early!

It's time to get out and about in the neighborhood. The warmer temps and plentiful rain provide the perfect climate for early spring produce, herbs and annuals, signaling the Mill City Farmers Market opening. Check out the info below in Around Town and mark your calendars. Another great neighborhood rendezvous spot to consider!

Mill City Commons: We learn. We share. We engage. We give.

Our Turn: A Conversation for Women
Thursday, April 28, 9:30 - 11:00 am
Flour Sack Flats, 521 2nd St SE, #512
MCC women, you are invited to attend Our Turn: A Conversation for Women. This group meets every other Thursday, alternating between morning and afternoon times. Locations and topics will change each time. This week, Peg Kavaney hosts a meeting on the topic of "Aging Well." We may not feel younger every day (as some advertising suggests), but aging can be a positive experience. Discussion questions will include: What are the unexpected joys and bright spots in our lives? What are the challenges? How are we handling them emotionally and physically? What are our fears? When choosing our physical and social environment for the last chapter, what is most important to us?
NOTE: For this week's meeting only, the time is 9:30 - 11:00 am.

Course materials and mah jongg tile sets will be provided by instructor Jody Brennan, who has a master's degree in education and teaches mah jongg in the St. Louis Park Senior Program. Today's class will launch a six-week series, meeting every Monday except May 30.

Rendezvous Readers' Book Chat
Wednesday, May 4, 9:30 - 10:30 am
Guthrie Theater Level 5 Express, 818 2nd St S
Join us to discuss Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates. In a series of essays written as a letter to his son, Coates confronts the notion of race in America and how it has shaped American history, many times at the cost of black bodies and lives. Thoughtfully exploring personal and historical events, from his time at Howard University to the Civil War, the author poignantly asks and attempts to answer difficult questions that plague modern society. He explains that the tragic examples of Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin and those killed in South Carolina are the results of a systematically constructed and maintained assault to black people--a structure that includes slavery, mass incarceration and police brutality as part of its foundation. Coates powerfully sums up the terrible history of the subjugation of black people in the United States.

If you'd like to read ahead, June's book is The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan. Have a book suggestion for the Book Chat? Email Barbara Goldner.

Great Decisions: Cuba and the U.S.
Monday, May 9, 7:00 - 8:30 pm
Winslow House Party Room, 100 2nd St SE
The United States announced in December 2014 that, after decades of isolation, it has begun taking major steps to normalize relations with Cuba. The announcement marks a dramatic shift away from a policy that has its roots in one of the darkest moments of the Cold War--the Cuban missile crisis. Although the U.S. trade embargo is unlikely to end any time soon, American and Cuban leaders today are trying to bring a relationship, once defined by antithetical ideologies, into the 21st century. Speaker Gary Prevost is professor of political science and international relations at the College of St. Benedict and St. John's University. He holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Minnesota and is the author of numerous books and articles on revolutionary parties and social movements, including, most recently, "Social Movements and Leftist Governments in Latin America: Confrontation or Co-optation?" Dave and Peggy Lucas host.

Registration on the MCC website is required for Great Decisions members. Sorry, not open to guests; to join the MCC Great Decisions Discussion Group, email the MCC office at info@millcitycommons.org.
