Update From the Executive Director

Recently, one of our new members was asked if she had experienced any difficulties adjusting to retirement. Her comments were so encouraging!

" I haven't had ANY difficulties adjusting to retirement.  In fact, Mill City Commons has been a big reason why!  Although I haven't become a "regular" for any particular activity, I HAVE gone to some "Our Turn" gatherings, "Last Tuesday Happy Hours," technology workshops, issue discussions, etc.  I have thoroughly enjoyed them.  I've made new friends and learned new information that I can put to use in my daily life.  I've gotten everything I had hoped for from being a part of this organization and, hopefully, have made a few contributions, too."

There are various reasons why our members choose to join MCC. While many have retired, nearly 20% remain gainfully employed. All, however, are committed to building community through shared experiences that connect one to another, as well as being there for one another for the inevitable "bumps in the road." It is a remarkable group of people!

Looking ahead, there is a terrific slate of opportunities to consider. Won't you join us? I'd welcome the opportunity to have you be my guest at an event, meet some of our members and experience for yourself the caliber of programming our members have come to enjoy and expect. 612-455-3329.

Rendezvous Reader's Book Chat
Wednesday, March 2, 9:30 - 10:30 am
Guthrie Theater Level 5 Express, 818 S 2nd St
Join us to discuss Dear Committee Members by Julie Schumacher. From Amazon: Jason Fitger is a beleaguered professor of creative writing and literature at Payne University, a small and not very distinguished liberal arts college in the Midwest. His once-promising writing career is in the doldrums, as is his romantic life, in part as a result of his unwise use of his private affairs for his novels. His life, a tale of woe, is revealed in a series of hilarious letters of recommendation that Fitger is endlessly called upon by his students and colleagues to produce, each one of which is a small masterpiece of high dudgeon, low spirits and passive-aggressive strategies.

If you'd like to read ahead, April's book is Being Mortal by Atul Gawande. Have a book suggestion for the Book Chat? Email Barbara Goldner.

MCC members and guests. No reservations required.

Great Decisions: The United Nations Post 2015
Monday, March 14, 7:00 - 8:30 pm
Winslow House Party Room, 100 2nd St SE
On the eve of the international organization's 70th birthday, the United Nations stands at a crossroads. This year marks a halfway point in the organization's global effort to eradicate poverty, hunger and discrimination, as well as ensure justice and dignity for all peoples. But as the UN's 193 member states look back at the success of the millennium development goals, they also must assess their needs for its sustainable development goals--a new series of benchmarks, which are set to expire in 2030. With the appointment of the ninth secretary-general in the near future as well, the next UN leader is bound to have quite a lot on his or her plate going into office. Our speaker, M. Jay Shahidi, is a board member of the United Nations Association-Minnesota and the American Refugee Committee. With the United Nations Association of Minnesota, he has co-chaired the Landmine and Advocacy committees. Bob Whitlock and Peggy Weber host at Winslow House.

Registration on the MCC website is required for Great Decisions members. Sorry, not open to guests; to join the MCC Great Decisions Discussion Group, email the MCC office at info@millcitycommons.org
