Update From the Executive Director

My husband and I spent this past weekend caring for my cousin's two young teenage sons, while she and her husband flew to NYC to support a good friend with an emerging health crisis. It was a delightful weekend for my husband and me, not so for my cousin and her husband. Their good friend, now at age 54, suddenly is faced with all that accompanies a terminal prognosis.

How quickly life can change.

While the weekend was a difficult one on many levels for my cousin and her husband, they saw, first-hand, the terrific network of people who are committed to helping their friend navigate the road ahead. Friends, co-workers, family and neighbors have rallied. It was difficult for them to leave, but they were heartened by the knowledge of those who will take over the day-to-day coordination of needs, all of whom have their friend's best interest at heart.

Community, in happy times and not so happy times, means so much. Investing in that which builds and secures meaningful relationships, that binds one friend to another, is an investment worth making.

Mill City Commons: We learn. We share. We engage. We give.

~ Joan Wright

Rendezvous Reader's Book Chat
Wednesday, March 2, 9:30 - 10:30 am
Guthrie Theater Level 5 Express, 818 S 2nd St
Join us to discuss Dear Committee Members by Julie Schumacher. From Amazon: Jason Fitger is a beleaguered professor of creative writing and literature at Payne University, a small and not very distinguished liberal arts college in the Midwest. His once-promising writing career is in the doldrums, as is his romantic life, in part as a result of his unwise use of his private affairs for his novels. His life, a tale of woe, is revealed in a series of hilarious letters of recommendation that Fitger is endlessly called upon by his students and colleagues to produce, each one of which is a small masterpiece of high dudgeon, low spirits and passive-aggressive strategies.

If you'd like to read ahead, April's book is Being Mortal by Atul Gawande. Have a book suggestion for the Book Chat? Email Barbara Goldner.

MCC members and guests. No reservations required.
