A Government of, by and for the People (Who Have Money)
Tuesday, February 2, 7:00 - 8:30 pm
Stonebridge, 1120 S 2nd St, #709
In the six years since the Supreme Court decision in Citizens United, campaign spending by special interest groups has risen exponentially. If the ideals of our nation's founders are to remain true and "the people" are to have a voice, this needs to change. Speaker Jeremy Schroeder is executive director of Common Cause Minnesota. He joined the organization in 2012 after more than a decade of leading campaigns on behalf of worker rights and human rights and against capital punishment. Cecily Hines and Tom Pettus host at Stonebridge.

Rendezvous Readers' Book Chat
Wednesday, February 3, 9:30 - 10:30 am
Guthrie Theater, Level 5 Express, 818 S 2nd St
Join us to discuss The Road to Character by David Brooks. In his latest book, the New York Times columnist focuses on the deeper values that should inform our lives. Responding to what he calls the culture of the Big Me, which emphasizes external success, Brooks challenges us, and himself, to rebalance the scales between our "resume virtues"--achieving wealth, fame and status--and our "eulogy virtues," those that exist at the core of our being: kindness, bravery, honesty or faithfulness, focusing on what kind of relationships we have formed.

If you'd like to read ahead, March's book will be Dear Committee Members by Julie Schumacher. Have a book suggestion for the Book Chat? Email Barbara Goldner.

MCC members and guests. No reservations required.

Have you found techniques that help you to maintain focus and stay attentive? Hosted in the home of Marcia Townley at Stone Arch Lofts.

Great Decisions: The Future of Kurdistan
Monday, February 8, 7:00 - 8:30 pm
Winslow House Party Room, 100 2nd St SE
Kurdistan, a mountainous area made up of parts of Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria, is home to one of the largest ethnic groups in the region: the Kurds. Now, most in the West know them for their small, oil-rich autonomous region in northern Iraq called Iraqi Krudistan--one of the United States' closer allies in the Middle East and a bulwark against the expansion of the so-called Islamic State. What does the success of Iraqi Kurdistan mean for Kurds in the surrounding region? Great Decisions guest speaker Henry Berman has personal ties to the Middle East region and has visited there seven times since 2008. In recent years, he has given presentations throughout the state on the Syrian refugee crisis, the U.S.-Israel relationship, and Egypt and the Arab Spring. Ginny and Will Craig host at Winslow House.

Sorry, not open to guests; to join the MCC Great Decisions Discussion Group, email the MCC office at info@millcitycommons.org. Registration on the MCC website is required for Great Decisions members.
