Update From the Executive Director

Good morning! When one can comfortably stand for an hour in early November on the Stone Arch Bridge, enjoying an ice cream cone, in full anticipation of the shared experience of the re-lighting of the Pillsbury sign - it is, in deed, a beautiful thing.

Today, MCC's Program Committee will meet for its monthly meeting. Did you know that all of MCC's programming is planned and carried out by its members? It's true. The remarkable slate of program and event opportunities is a hallmark of the organization and, as members responded in a recent survey, an important factor in their continued support of and membership in Mill City Commons. If you are not a "committee person" but would enjoy sitting in on a Program Committee meeting to observe or bring a programming idea to share, you're invited to join us on any given first Tuesday of the month. Simply RSVP via phone, 612-455-3329 or email, info@millcitycommons.orgwe'll be ready and waiting for you!

If you are a regular reader of Mill City Musings and look forward to its weekly arrival in your In Box, member or not, please consider including our organization on Give to the Max Day, November 12th by clicking here.

See you around the neighborhood...and remember to VOTE!

Rendezvous Readers' Book Chat
Wednesday, November 4, 9:30 - 10:30 am
Guthrie Theater Level 5 Express, 818 S 2nd St
Did you know that between the 18th and mid-20th centuries, countless African Americans passed as white? Join us to discuss two books that address "passing." In the non-fiction book A Chosen Exile by Allyson Hobbs, readers will learn about the separation from one racial identity and the leap into another. This revelatory history explores the possibilities and challenges that racial indeterminacy presented to those living in a country obsessed with racial distinctions. Passing by Nella Larsen is a fiction story about two childhood friends who meet later in life and discover their different paths. One "passed" as white and married a white racist while the other married a black doctor and committed herself to racial uplift. The Book Chat Readers encourage people to read one or both of the books but all are welcome, whether or not you've read the books.  Please note: Library copies of A Chosen Exile are limited but it is available for purchase as an e-book.

Want to read ahead? December's book is Family Tree by Barbara Delinsky (subject to change).

MCC members and guests welcome. No reservations required!
Men's Coffee and Conversation
Thursday, November 5, 7:30 - 8:30 am
Elsie's Restaurant, 729 Marshall St NE
Caffeine and camaraderie for the male members of MCC and guests! This group meets every other Thursday and is hosted by various members who get the conversation going. Please register by the Monday prior to Men's Coffee and Conversation. MCC member Ron Vantine leads a conversation this week on what we've been reading this year. Select two books that you have read in the last year (fiction, non-fiction, biographies, How-To, etc), and come prepared to describe why you recommend them to the group. Please write down the name, author, and a brief description of your recommended books on a note card. Allan will use that information to provide a list of all of our recommendations to our group. Last year, that list was a great source of new book ideas for many of us.

Great Decisions: India Changes Course
Monday, November 9, 7:00 - 8:30 pm
Winslow House, 100 2nd St S
Fed up with corruption, dynastic policies and ineffective public services, Indian voters catapulted Narenda Modi and his Party to power in the country's 2014 elections. For voters, Modi embodied real change and an India that wasn't stumbling, but running, to greatness. But for the U.S., change in India brings its own set of unknowns, heralding an age ruled by a prime minister new to national office and other policymakers who have been out of the public eye for a decade. Great Decisions guest speaker Mary McCormick is the sole practitioner and principal of McCormick International, focusing on international business law. She has more than 30 years of international legal experience with a particular interest in Asian countries and cultures. Bud and Carol Hayden host at Winslow House.

Sorry, not open to guests; to join the MCC Great Decisions Discussion Group, email the MCC office at info@millcitycommons.org.  Registration on the MCC website is required for Great Decisions members.
