Pattern Glass Museum

Pattern Glass Museum, The Towers, 15 S 1st St, Ste A4
Did you know that there's a museum dedicated to preserving one of the largest collections of decorated American pattern glass in the United States?  And it's right here in the neighborhood!  The collection primarily spans the years from the 1880's to the 1920's.  The displayed glass was originally made by a myriad of U.S. glass companies for purchase by most people of modest means instead of the more expensive cut glass that only the wealthy could afford.  Join us for a special tour to view an incredible display of pattern glass, while learning more about its history.

Locations and topics will change each time. On Oct 29 at 3:30 pm, MCC member Diane Radack hosts on the topic of "Let's share!" It will be at the home of Beverly Fitzgerald at Lourdes Square, 174 Bank St. Most of us have discovered ideas or processes that make something easier or more efficient...in the home, on the job, or on the road. Perhaps it is a "hint from Heloise," or the wisest advice you have ever been given or an unknown fact you would like to share. You are also welcome to simply come and enjoy some Halloween treats and listen to others. Please bring a pencil.

Rendezvous Readers' Book Chat
Wednesday, November 4, 9:30 - 10:30 am
Guthrie Theater Level 5 Express, 818 S 2nd St
Did you know that between the 18th and mid-20th centuries, countless African Americans passed as white? Join us to discuss two books that address "passing." In the non-fiction book A Chosen Exile by Allyson Hobbs, readers will learn about the separation from one racial identity and the leap into another. This revelatory history explores the possibilities and challenges that racial indeterminacy presented to those living in a country obsessed with racial distinctions. Passing by Nella Larsen is a fiction story about two childhood friends who meet later in life and discover their different paths. One "passed" as white and married a white racist while the other married a black doctor and committed herself to racial uplift. The Book Chat Readers encourage people to read one or both of the books but all are welcome, whether or not you've read the books.  Please note: Library copies of A Chosen Exile are limited but it is available for purchase as an e-book.

Want to read ahead? December's book is Family Tree by Barbara Delinsky (subject to change).

MCC members and guests welcome. No reservations required!

Please register by the Monday prior to Men's Coffee and Conversation. MCC member Ron Vantine leads a conversation this week on what we've been reading this year. Select two books that you have read in the last year (fiction, non-fiction, biographies, How-To, etc), and come prepared to describe why you recommend them to the group. Please write down the name, author, and a brief description of your recommended books on a note card. Allan will use that information to provide a list of all of our recommendations to our group. Last year, that list was a great source of new book ideas for many of us.

Great Decisions: India Changes Course
Monday, November 9, 7:00 - 8:30 pm
Winslow House, 100 2nd St S
Fed up with corruption, dynastic policies and ineffective public services, Indian voters catapulted Narenda Modi and his Party to power in the country's 2014 elections. For voters, Modi embodied real change and an India that wasn't stumbling, but running, to greatness. But for the U.S., change in India brings its own set of unknowns, heralding an age ruled by a prime minister new to national office and other policymakers who have been out of the public eye for a decade. Great Decisions guest speaker Mary McCormick is the sole practitioner and principal of McCormick International, focusing on international business law. She has more than 30 years of international legal experience with a particular interest in Asian countries and cultures. Bud and Carol Hayden host at Winslow House.

Sorry, not open to guests; to join the MCC Great Decisions Discussion Group, email the MCC office at info@millcitycommons.org.  Registration on the MCC website is required for Great Decisions members.
