Executive Director Update

The weather forecasters were predicting possible showers for this morning, but the weather cooperated and members enjoyed the first of this month's four Birding Walks! Walks are scheduled for early Tuesday mornings throughout May -- rain or shine. In addition to Birding Walks, we've scheduled two Nosy Neighbor Tours and an architecture tour at the U of M this month. Wonderful opportunities to experience life and springtime in our fabulous neighborhood. But tours aren't all that's happening -- take a look at details below and go online for the entire Mill City Commons May calendar for ways to stay informed, get connected and enjoy the season! Hope to see you at an upcoming event -- please read on for details!!

Rendezvous Readers' Book Chat
Wednesday, May 6, 9:30 - 10:30 am
Guthrie Theater Level 5 Express, 818 S 2nd St
Join us to discuss Middlemarch by George Eliot.  Middlemarch is a complex tale of idealism, disillusion, profligacy, loyalty and frustrated love. This penetrating analysis of the life of an English provincial town during the time of social unrest prior to the Reform Bill of 1832 is told through the lives of Dorothea Brooke and Dr. Tertius Lydgate who illuminate the condition of English life in the mid-nineteenth century.

Get started now:  June's book will be The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri (subject to change).  Have a book suggestion for the Book Chat?  Email Barbara Goldner.

MCC members and guests.  No reservations required!

Wednesday, May 6, 3:30 - 5:00 pm
CHS Field, 360 N Broad St, St. Paul
Join architect Julie Snow for a behind-the-scenes tour of the St. Paul Saints new stadium.  Julie is known for her exceptional design of condos and museums and was thrilled at the opportunity to do a ballpark.  Snow's stadium design includes many upgrades while maintaining old traditions with an emphasis on the fan experience.   Learn about the sustainability features that are hidden within the design, including permeable paving on the concourse and storm water retention below the field.  We'll meet at the CHS Field ticket windows at Broadway and Fifth.  Worried about rush hour traffic?  Take the green line and/or stay for dinner after the tour!  Please note:  space is limited.

Great Decisions:  U.S. Policy Toward Africa
Monday, May 11, 7:00 - 8:30 pm
Winslow House Party Room, 100 2nd St SE

Africa is home to some of the fastest growing economies in the world, and it's become a draw for foreign investors from across the globe.  The U.S. has promised to promote "strong institutions, not strong men," and to favor good governance and healthy economies over profit.  How can U.S. policy live up to its promise and values while securing its interests in the region?  Our guest speaker is Thomas O'Toole, Professor Emeritus at St. Cloud State University.  As a scholar and teacher, he is the recipient of four Fulbright awards, a Wenner-Gren, and a Danforth.  He has written widely on democracy, the environment from a global perspective, and Africa.  He holds a doctorate from Carnegie Mellon University and an MA from the University of Minnesota.  Hosted by Ellie Hands at the Winslow House Party Room.

Sorry, not open to guests; to join the MCC Great Decisions Discussion Group, email the MCC office at info@millcitycommons.org.  Registration on the MCC website is required for Great Decisions members.
