Executive Director Update

MCC Member Mary Bednarowski emailed me a link to an innovative nonprofit in Sarasota, FL called the Institute for the Ages. They are hosting the 7th Annual International Conference on Positive Aging. The 2014 Conference theme, Positive Aging Transcends: The Voices of Innovation and Community, will showcase the innovative efforts of entrepreneurs and business leaders, academic researchers, government policy makers and others who are engaging with communities for the social and economic benefits of Positive Aging. By chance is there an MCC member or friend in Sarasota during the February 9-12, 2014 conference?  I'd love to hear from someone who is able to attend.  To learn more, click on this link

Rendezvous Readers' Book Chat
Wednesday, February 5, 9:30 - 10:30 am
Guthrie Theater Level 5 Express, 818 S 2nd St
Join us to discuss Being Esther by Miriam Karmel.  Born to parents who fled the shtetl, Esther Lustig has led a seemingly conventional life- marriage, two children, a life in suburban Chicago.  Now, at the age of eighty-five, her husband is deceased, her children have families of their own, and most of her friends are gone.  Even in this diminished condition, life has its moments of richness, as well as its memorable characters.  Being Esther is an exploration of aging, a search for meaning, and about the need, as Esther puts it, for better roadmaps for growing old.

Great Decisions

The Towers Community Room, 15 S 1st St
The Great Decisions Discussion Group is centered on the Great Decisions briefing book developed by the Foreign Policy Association.  John Harrigan, retired professor of Political Science at Hamline University, will discuss Energy Independence.  Taking the bargaining chip of oil dependence off the table would be good for American foreign policy.  But the very technological advances that make independence possible have created a dilemma for lawmakers.  In a government with fixed resources, should the U.S. encourage more traditional fuel production or invest in the young technology of renewable resources?  LLoyd Beebe hosts.

Mill City Commons
In the Know!

We have been busy with the website this past week!  Our membership database and member-recommended vendors were transferred to the new website, we had a few members test out the site, and we began uploading photos.  We want to thank Peggy Weber for providing photos for use on the site and Patty Canney who helped to edit them.

This week you can expect an email to arrive that will include a link for you to sign in to our new site.  If you are a dual household that shares one email address, you will receive two emails, one for each household member. The email will have a username and temporary password.  When you log in, you will be prompted to change your password before accessing the Members-Only site.  You will also be able to update your profile by including a brief bio and photo. Once you are registered in the site, you can register for events, search the member directory, and view members-only information.  If you have problems, you can call our office at (612) 455-3329 or call our web customer support line at (866) 457-2582.

We know there will be glitches as we move ahead so we ask for your patience and understanding as we make this transition.  We are excited for you to see and learn to navigate our new site this week!
