There's still time to register and join us for today's Nosy Neighbor Tour (NNT) of HGA Architects. Victor Pechaty, design principal, who worked on the design will be available to give an overview and tour. After the NNT, join us for Last Tuesday Happy Hour at Smack Shack. Happy hour requires no reservations -- Dutch treat!
  
The program committee meets next Tuesday to plan our December and January calendar. If you have a program idea and/or you would like to get involved by joining the committee, please let me know. It is truly our members who make Mill City Commons Your Neighborhood Village for a Lifetime!

Nosy Neighbor Tour: Ford Center and HGA
Tuesday, October 29, 4:00-5:00pm
Ford Center/HGA, 420 5th Street North, Suite 100 
Join fellow members for a tour of this former Ford Model T assembly plant turned modern office building. The historic building features a restored red-brick façade with rebuilt original windows and architecturally compatible replacement windows, new public entrance pavilion, and renovated lobby with 20-foot-high ceilings. HGA architects designed the building and house their offices on floors 1 through 4. The design team converted the original 1st-floor showroom into a gallery with conference rooms, commons area, espresso bar, and lunch lounge and has won numerous awards for their architecture and design.

This story is about a married couple who lives on an isolated island, who, after years of not being able to conceive, find a dead man washed ashore with his living baby. Two years later, after deciding to raise this child, the couple returns to the mainland to be reminded that there are other people in this world, and how their choice has devastated one of them. Come to visit the orchids Malcolm and Marsha Blumenthal grow in their Whitney Loft. Marsha will introduce us to a few of the more than 20,000 orchid species and suggest how to care for and hopefully re-bloom them in our own homes. We'll also enjoy tea, coffee and cookies.

Nosy Neighbor Tour: Lundstrom Center

Ten blocks up the Mississippi River is a dynamic and vibrant performing arts center that teaches musical theater technique and performance (voice, dance and drama) to children, teenagers and adults. The Lundstrum Center for the Performing Arts offers a systematic musical theater curriculum taught by professional actors, dancers, and singers. Join us as we tour the center; view three of the classes preparing for a musical theater performance; and meet with Executive Director and former Broadway actor Amy Casserly Ellis, as well as a teaching artist and a student. Come prepared for a fun, rich and stimulating evening.

The Great Decisions Discussion Group is centered on the Great Decisions briefing book developed by the Foreign Policy Association. This well researched annual publication provides eight timely global topics to be read by group participants prior to each session. Should China growing emphasis on political ties and natural resource extraction inform U.S. Relations with African nations? Peggy and Dave Lucas host.

Guthrie Play Reading: Born Yesterday

Enjoy this month's Guthrie Play Reading of Born Yesterday, a deliciously witty comedy about a corrupt businessman trying to get ahead. Harry Brock, a junk-dealer millionaire on the rise, heads to Washington with his chorus girl girlfriend Billie Dawn in tow, hoping to influence a senator in some personal business dealings. But he soon gets advice suggesting that his seemingly dim-witted girlfriend will need a little polish to get ahead in D.C. society. Brock hires a newspaperman for the task but gets more than he bargained for when, in a deliriously funny turn of events, he discovers a little bit of learning can be a dangerous thing! A Guthrie dramaturg will assign parts.

Mill City Commons   

In the Know!

 

  Repairs will soon begin along historic Main Street, between Hennepin Avenue and Third Avenue SE. Work will begin late October and is expected to be complete by mid-November. Repairs will include patching of the street and walks, and reinstalling loose and uneven pavers. A decision was made to make repairs of a temporary nature that will improve conditions for vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians, without undergoing extensive and expensive work at this time. An entire road and walk reconstruction project is expected sometime in the next few years. While repairs are being made, one lane of the parkway may be temporarily closed. Areas of walk may be temporarily closed, also, with pedestrian traffic re-routed. Thank you for your patience while these necessary repairs are made.
