Executive Director Update
MCC Member Sabina Sten is on our program committee and has proposed a Mill City Commons trip to Vancouver, Canada. The committee agreed Sabina should take the idea to MCC membership. She has written a brief description and a short questionnaire in the "News from Members" column below. Please take a few minutes to read and respond.

Consider joining me for the Weisman Art Museum tour this Thursday where we'll be viewing photography and learning about a documentary project featuring 13 Somali men living here in the Twin Cities. In addition, our docent will take us on an informative tour of this iconic structure and share a story or two about architect Frank Gehry. I'll be driving -- please let me know if you would like a ride.

Many thanks to MCC Member Jeanne Ravich for writing the "Mill City Commons In the Know!" column and to MCC Member Peg Kavaney for sharing a favorite neighborhood resource!  -- Linnea

News From Members
MCC Member Sabina Sten and former MCC Member Leslie Van Duzer (now living in Vancouver and Dean of the University of British Columbia's Architecture Department) are researching organizing a Mill City Commons 4-5 day trip to Vancouver in April 2014 - an absolutely gorgeous time of year. Leslie has put together a proposed itinerary - you'll find it here. Please take a look if the idea of a brief sejour in Vancouver appeals to you. In order to pursue this idea, we need the following feedback:
  • An expression of interest in an MCC trip to Vancouver
  • An indication of a daily budget per person that would work for you and will determine the hotel we choose for our stay (this is in addition to the flight costs which will be approximately $500)
  • An expression of interest in specific ideas from Leslie's itinerary

Please return this feedback to Sabina at sabina_sten@hotmail.com by August 31. Many thanks!

In the Know!

Music...gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life. (Plato). If you're the one playing the instrument it might also benefit your brain. A growing body of evidence suggests that learning to play an instrument and continuing to practice and play it may offer mental benefits throughout life.

MCC member Peg Kavaney grew up with music - fond memories of her mother at the piano, and her own piano lessons. Peg is once again a piano student, at our wonderful McPhail Center for Music. In a class of three adults, she is again enjoying the music and the learning. She also loves the new friendships, including the occasional after-class glass of wine with her fellow students.

Peg highly recommends her piano teacher, Susan Genaw. If piano is not your thing, take a look at McPhail's course catalog. There is something for every music lover at this rich resource located right in our neighborhood. Music not only soothes the soul, it benefits the brain.
