News From Members

MCC Member Peg Kavaney wants to tell you about The Geriatrical Theatrical: Celebrating the Chronologically Enriched, a coming-of-age musical for all ages. Laugh along as curmudgeonly Louie Leonard is wooed into moving to a Senior Cooperative. After grudgingly accepting a role in the musical The Geriatrical Theatrical, he comes to realize that truly...the best years of our lives are the years we choose to make the best! Performances will be June 4-July 28 at The Plymouth Playhouse, 2705 Annapolis Lane North, Plymouth. MCC Member Patty Connelly has reserved group tickets for MCC for the 1:00 pm performance on Wednesday, July 10. Tickets are $22.50 per person. Please contact Linnea Tweed at (612) 455-3329 or linneatweed@millcitycommons.org to purchase tickets by June 25th. Click here to read a Star Tribune article about The Geriatrical Theatrical.

MCC Member Scott Parkin invites you to join guides Michael Rainville, Scott Parkin and Leslie Palmer-Ross for East Hennepin: An Historic Walking Tour on Sundays, 10:00-11:15 am, June through September. The bustling commercial district surrounding East Hennepin Avenue has hosted many names throughout the years, but everyone knows its unforgettable landmarks...Surdyk's, Nye's, Kramarczuk's, Historic Main Street, and Lourdes Church. Join us for a "behind-the-scenes" history of the busy streets, unique businesses, and colorful people that have shaped this popular walking neighborhood. Hear amazing stories told from the perspective of its residents, shopkeepers, and local historians. Come away with perspective on what life here might have actually felt like throughout the neighborhood's most defining eras. Meet at the corner of Main Street and East Hennepin Avenue (Riverplace). The tour is a circle ending at the Ard Godfrey House. Click here to register. Tickets are $10 per person.

MCC Member Ellie Hands invites you to explore the National Park in your own backyard on a 10-person voyageur canoe. Paddle through the heart of Minneapolis and Saint Paul on the Mississippi River and discover that you don't have to travel far to enjoy the great outdoors. Each trip is only $45 for adults and $30 for youth and you can choose from a variety of dates and themes: Mom Enough Family Paddle on June 23, Paddle with Explorer Ann Bancroft on July 13, or Paddle and Sing with The Okee Dokee Brothers on July 21. Day trips are an introductory half-day canoe experience. They're a great way for you and your family to experience our community and its wild places from a whole new vantage point. Voyageur canoes, safety and paddling equipment, experienced staff, and a shuttle are provided. Please bring weather appropriate clothing and a bag lunch, and, if you would like, a small picnic blanket. Day trips involve and engage everyone regardless of their age, ability, or previous outdoor experience. Click here for more information.

MCC Members Kim Eslinger and Dave Tinjum have created a metro website devoted specifically to our neighborhood. It's a place to go to find out what's happening ... whether it's a new restaurant opening, a local event, proposed new construction, etc. Check it out at:  MillCityTimes.com

Craft Cage Match

Attend a Craft Cage Match on the roof of the historic Grain Belt Brewery, 1224 Marshall Street NE, on Thursday, June 20, 7:00-9:30 pm. The participants will compete in two groups led by hometown heroes and craft curators Jennifer Komar Olivarez of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and Jennifer Scanlan, formerly of the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. The winners of the evening will be determined by how they fare in various art-related feats. Rounds will include debating contemporary art issues and craft "physical challenges" such as spinning yarn, throwing pots, and more! Questions will be answered, secrets will be revealed, and hot-button topics will be put on the line at the rooftop rumble! Stop by for a fun-filled evening, enjoy the view of downtown Minneapolis, and taste vittles from our Northeast neighbors at Chowgirls Catering. Click here for more information from the American Craft Council.

Book Signing at the Mill City Museum
Join Penny Petersen, author of Minneapolis Madams: The Lost History of Prostitution on the Riverfront, for a lecture and book signing on Thursday, June 27, 7:00 pm, at the Mill City Museum, 704 South Second Street. Her book is a riveting account of the late 19th century Minneapolis red-light districts and the powerful madams who ran them. The madams hired well-known architects to design their brothels, reshaping entire neighborhoods and contributed to the economic life of the city and exerted influence over politicians and civic leaders.

Did You Know?

Mill City Commons has several organizations on our vendor list that provide Care Management.

The National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers defines care management as "a holistic, client-centered approach to caring for older adults or disabled persons. The goal of care management is to improve the client's quality of life and reduce family stress through assessment and monitoring, planning and problem-solving, education and advocacy and family caregiver coaching".

After performing a complete assessment, the care manager will create a care plan to meet the needs of the client and arrange or refer for necessary services. Care managers can help with needs such as home care, medical management, legal issues, financial issues, safety and more.

We have three vendors on our Mill City Commons Vendor Directory that provide home care or care management services to help navigate unexpected "bumps in the road." All three of these organizations perform individual assessments to help determine what services may be helpful for your situation. Click on the links to learn more about our vendors:
