Nosy Neighbor Tour: Star Tribune Heritage Center

Join fellow members for a tour of the Star Tribune Heritage Printing Press. If you like BIG, this is the place to see! The presses are 100 feet high, rolls of newsprint weigh 2,500 pounds and the building is the size of nine football fields. Videos and cameras are not allowed. Close-toed shoes are required. Free parking is available in the Star Tribune lot off 2nd Street and 8th Avenue. The entrance to the Star Tribune is on First Street. MCC Member Carol Saarela will be our tour guide.

World View Series: El Camino

Our Worldview Series resumes with Mary Daniels' presentation on her pilgrimages along El Camino de Santiago de Compostella. This pilgrimage is more than 1200 years old, and has been designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO. The walk extends across
northern Spain, with various starting points in western Europe, ending at the Cathedral of Santiago Compostella in Galicia in northwestern Spain. For most, this is a rich spiritual journey. Please join us as Mary tells of her experiences along The Way. Mary Daniels recently completed her fourth trek along El Camino de Santiago.

Friends of the Mississippi Celebrates 20 Years

Please join hosts Bud and Carol Hayden for an educational event featuring Friends of the Mississippi River Executive Director, Whitney Clark. Founded in 1993 and celebrating their 20th Anniversary, Friends of the Mississippi River has become a national model for urban river protection and revitalization. Clark will speak about the health of the Mississippi River in the Twin Cities highlighting some of the findings of the organization's State of the River Report which it published with the National Park Service last fall. The river's future is still unwritten. What can concerned citizens and riverfront residents do to ensure that progress continues toward a healthier and more vital river? Please join us to find out.

Pathways Health Crisis Resource Center

Tim Thorpe, executive director for Pathways, will provide an overview of complementary therapies and the research-supported outcomes experienced by those with illness as well as their caregivers. MCC Member Penny Winton and her late husband, Mike Winton, were among the original founders and have been major funders of Pathways. It was their conviction that individuals with life-threatening illness need not be defeated by their illness but can discover an expanded sense of self. Stories and feedback collected from Pathways participants will be included in the program. Penny Winton hosts.

MCC Member Ron Vantine wants you to know about Positive Aging, an electronic newsletter from the Taos Institute. The newsletter brings to light resources--from scientific research on aging, gerontology practices, and daily life--that contribute to an appreciation of the aging process. MCC Member Peg Kavaney wants to tell you about The Geriatrical Theater: Celebrating the Chronologically Enriched, a coming-of-age musical for all ages. Laugh along as curmudgeonly Louie Leonard is wooed into moving to a Senior Cooperative. After grudgingly accepting a role in the musical The Geriatrical Theatrical, he comes to realize that truly...the best years of our lives are the years we choose to make the best! Performances will be June 4-July 28 at The Plymouth Playhouse, 2705 Annapolis Lane North, Plymouth. MCC Member Patty Connelly has reserved group tickets for a matinee performance on Wednesday, July 10. MCC Member and Author Judy Healey invites you to a book reading of her newest book, Frederick Weyerhaeuser and the American West. This biography highlights one of the great industrialists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and founder of the international timber corporation, the Weyerhaeuser Company. Judith Koll Healey narrates the life of this extraordinary man and offers a thoughtful perspective on his achievements as well as the limitations of his vision for the expansion of the American West. MCC Members Kathy Lenzmeier and Mary Racciatti invite you to the once-in-a-lifetime theater-wide gala honoring 50 years of the Guthrie on Saturday, June 22. The evening starts at 6:30 pm with a festive party on levels four and five and will include small plates, hors d'oeuvres, lavish chef performance stations, a sushi bar, butler passed wines, wine tastings, signature martinis and live music. Kathy and Mary have made arrangements for a table designated for Mill City Commons in the Target Lounge to serve as a gathering place. At 8:30 pm, BEHOLD: A Gala Performance will be held on the Wurtele Thrust Stage and will feature actors, composers and writers with ties to the Guthrie's past and future. BEHOLD will be co-hosted by Guthrie favorites Greta Oglesby and Sally Wingert and will feature Daniel Gerroll, Whoopi Goldberg, Patricia Kalember, T.R. Knight, Tracie Bennett, an original composition by Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown, and award-winning male vocal ensemble Cantus. MCC Member Ellie Hands invites you to explore the National Park in your own backyard on a 10-person voyageur canoe. Paddle through the heart of Minneapolis and Saint Paul on the Mississippi River and discover that you don't have to travel far to enjoy the great outdoors. Each trip is only $45 for adults and $30 for youth and you can choose from a variety of dates and themes: Mom Enough Family Paddle on June 23, Paddle with Explorer Ann Bancroft on July 13, or Paddle and Sing with The Okee Dokee Brothers on July 21. Day trips are an introductory half-day canoe experience. They're a great way for you and your family to experience our community and its wild places from a whole new vantage point. Voyageur canoes, safety and paddling equipment, experienced staff, and a shuttle are provided. Please bring weather appropriate clothing and a bag lunch, and, if you would like, a small picnic blanket. Spoonriver has opened their patio and started their new summer menu including some new and exciting items and the return of some summer favorites. Brain Health Awareness Day
Mayor Rybak has declared June 22 Brain Health Awareness Day in Minneapolis. The American Academy of Neurology and the American Brain Foundation will be handing out 1,000 FREE bike helmets at the Mill City Farmer's Market on Saturday, June 22, beginning at 8:00 am. Enjoy healthy brain food at the Mill City Farmers Market all day on June 22 and stop by the American Academy of Neurology tent to meet our neighbors.

The Hennepin County Library's At Home Service provides books, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs and other materials at no charge to Hennepin County residents who cannot get to the library because of illness, disability, or visual impairment. Patrons can call the At Home phone line to request materials and the items will be mailed to your home (with return postage paid) or a volunteer can deliver the materials to your home. Call the At Home phone line at 612-543-8850 to "get answers to informational questions, book recommendations, and all the services received in a traditional library setting."
