Executive Director Update

Today is National Healthcare Decisions Day. It is a collaborative effort by national, state and community organizations to inspire, educate and empower the public and providers about the importance of advance care planning. Last week we learned about advance directives from Honoring Choices. Next week we hear from an ethics consultant about POLST (provider orders for life sustaining treatment). You'll find more details in this email under "I Have an Advance Directive, Now What?"
Mill City Commons provides engaging programming to educate and connect our members. We now refer to our wellness programming as "Healthy Village Programs." Look for a Healthy Village Program on safety and minimizing falls in the next couple of months. Thanks!  -- Linnea

Around Town

State of the River Presentation
How is our Mississippi River? Is it okay to swim in? To eat the fish? Should I worry about Asian carp? How are the eagles? The National Park Service and Friends of the Mississippi River have collaborated to provide some answers in the form of a "State of the River Report." Click here to access the report. The report's authors, Lark Weller and Trevor Russell, will present the report on Wednesday, April 17, 7:00-8:00 pm, at Minnehaha Academy Chapel (North Campus), 3100 West River Parkway. While strongly supported by science, the report is presented in a non-technical manner for the general public. It highlights 13 key indicators of water quality and river health in the metro Mississippi River. A Stewardship Guide of river friendly tips for home, yard and community practices will also be available at the presentation. Sponsored by Longfellow Community Council's River Gorge Committee, the event is free and open to the public. Park in the east lot (access lot from 32nd Street South) and enter at the clock tower door. For more information, contact Lyndon Torstenson at 651-293-8426.

Did You Know?

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 79 million Americans are at risk for developing diabetes, but only 11% of them know they are at increased risk.  An article from MedlinePlus states that more than 30% of prediabetic individuals (those with higher than normal blood sugar levels) will develop type 2 diabetes within 10 years.  Currently, 8.3% of the U.S. population has diabetes.  If you have prediabetes, there are steps you can take to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.  Risk factors for developing diabetes include obesity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet and family history of the disease. Diabetes can be prevented or delayed by losing 5-7% of your body weight, exercising 150 minutes per week (that's just over 20 minutes a day!), and limiting sugars and carbohydrates in your diet.  Through exercise and diet, the risk for developing diabetes can be reduced by 58%. The drug, metformin, can also be used to reduce the risk of diabetes in some individuals.
