Executive Director Update
Many of you have heard that I am finally moving back downtown! I enjoyed living in the Riverfront back in the mid 90's and walking to work when I was Community Relations Manager at Dayton's. I love being part of this wonderful community and excited to be once again living in it. I will be joining MCC members Madeline Betsch and Kathy and Bill Fox at The Towers in March! This year has brought lots of change with a new office and now a new apartment! Many thanks to Madeline and Kathy for their help finding the perfect, move in ready home with extraordinary neighbors. And thank you to Scott Parkin for handling the sale for both the seller and me. My move date has not yet been set, but some time mid-March. Right now I'm busy sorting through closets and enjoying the idea of simplifying for my new space. There's no place like home! -- Linnea

A note from Patti Ries,
Mill City Commons
Program Coordinator
Did You Know?
Stay fit and reduce your stress levels to help your body--and your brain--to feel good!
An article from BrainFacts.org reports that regular exercise, a healthy diet and lowered stress levels contribute to brain health. Physical activity has been found to prevent atrophy of the brain, including the hippocampus, which plays an important role in memory. The article notes that inactive people that began to walk three times a week experienced improvement in cognition and that physical activity is believed to positively impact executive control functions, including planning, multi-tasking and scheduling. Weight management is also associated with brain health. Research shows that individuals with more body fat perform more poorly on cognitive tests than those with less body fat. Blood sugar levels also impact brain health. Diets high in fat and sugar are believed to increase the development of the protein, amyloid beta, which is linked to Alzheimer's disease. Lastly, chronic stress can weaken the immune system, lead to weight gain and release hormones into the bloodstream that damage the brain.
