A note from Patti Ries,
Mill City Commons
Program Coordinator
Did You Know?
We are hearing a great deal about the flu season this year. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
the flu virus is a contagious respiratory illness and is believed to spread primarily through
droplets from coughing, sneezing
Symptoms of the flu may include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headaches and fatigue. The CDC continues to recommend getting the flu vaccine and receiving antiviral treatment as soon as possible for people who get sick.
While the flu refers to a respiratory illness, the stomach flu is typically caused by a norovirus which causes inflammation of the stomach and intestines and is highly contagious. According to an article by Caring Right at Home, symptoms of norovirus include sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, stomach pain and possibly fever, headache and body aches, with symptoms usually lasting one to three days. To recuperate, bed rest and plenty of fluids are recommended and watch for signs of dehydration including decreased urination, dry mouth and throat, and dizziness when standing up. The best way to avoid catching and spreading norovirus is careful hand washing and safe food preparation including thorough washing of fruits and vegetables, cooking foods to the recommended temperature, and disinfecting food preparation surfaces with bleach-based cleaners. Contaminated clothing and linens should be washed in hot water (above 140 degrees) with detergent and machine dried.
Stay healthy!
