Executive Director Update
I am thrilled at the number of donations coming in for Mill City Commons fifth annual "Turkey, Dressings and Extra Helpings" campaign. Thank you, members and friends for your donations! I've had several people ask me about clothing donations. We are accepting new or gently used clothing for children especially cold weather clothing and clothing for adults to wear for an interview. In addition, we would like small gifts for people living in homeless shelters, items that don't take up much room like costume jewelry or books. Drop off sites at North Star Lofts entrance and the MCC Office, 17 Fourth Street SE. To learn more, please click here. Thank you!

MCBA/Jerome Foundation Book Arts Fellowships Series XI
Since 1985 the Jerome Foundation has helped artists push the boundaries of contemporary book arts by supporting the creation of new book works. This year, five artists including book artist, printmaker and MCC member Cathy Ryan
were awarded Fellowships. Cathy describes her project: "The images in this suite of prints entitled Atlas reflect my response to distinct and resonant descriptions of the North American landscape chosen from the works of seven iconic authors." She says of the Fellowship, "Beyond project funding, it provided a context that supported the focus and dedication necessary to complete the work, and a venue in which to exhibit it. Most significantly, it provided the gift of time to consider and refine intension, content and process." This exhibition at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts runs through January 13, 2013.

A note from Patti Ries, Mill City Commons
Program Coordinator
Did You Know?
Finding purpose, meaning and joy in life is vital to maintaining wellness! As we encounter changes in life related to family, friends, home, retirement, etc., it can be a challenge to maintain a sense of purpose and joy. An article from Helpguide suggests that we engage in meaningful and enjoyable pursuits, nourish the spirit, enjoy life and laugh! According to the article, a sense of humor helps us to "get through the tough times, look outside of yourself, laugh at the absurdities of life, and transcend difficulties." Healthy coping mechanisms and resilience help us to weather the ups and downs of life. Strategies to improve coping skills include focusing on what we are grateful for, acknowledging and expressing our feelings, accepting what we can't change, looking for the silver lining in situations, and taking small steps each day to deal with life challenges.
