Executive Director Update

Many thanks goes out to Mill City Commons members and friends who participated in Give to the Max Day last Thursday! Mill City Commons raised $3670 and we are most grateful!! Here in Minnesota, 53,339 people gave more than $16.3 million to 4,381 organizations in just 24 hours. Thank you for your generosity!

This week, we launch our fifth annual "Turkey, Dressings and Extra Helpings" campaign! This annual food and clothing drive helps hundreds of neighbors in need with meals, clothing and gifts. We raise money to buy groceries (the "Turkey"). We also collect clothing for People Serving People (the "Dressings") and gifts for two other shelters in the city for their holiday parties (the "Extra Helpings"). In addition to donations of gently used clothing, we hope to raise $2250 to provide 50 families with not just a holiday meal, but leftovers (that's just $45 per family!) -- a big plus for families with children home from school for a week.

MCBA/Jerome Foundation Book Arts Fellowships Series XI

Since 1985 the Jerome Foundation has helped artists push the boundaries of contemporary book arts by supporting the creation of new book works. This year, five artists including book artist, printmaker and MCC member Cathy Ryan

were awarded Fellowships. Cathy describes her project: "The images in this suite of prints entitled Atlas reflect my response to distinct and resonant descriptions of the North American landscape chosen from the works of seven iconic authors." She says of the Fellowship, "Beyond project funding, it provided a context that supported the focus and dedication necessary to complete the work, and a venue in which to exhibit it. Most significantly, it provided the gift of time to consider and refine intension, content and process." This exhibition at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts runs through January 13, 2013.

Did You Know?

An "Attitude of Gratitude" can benefit our lives in many ways! According to the article, "Boost Your Health with a Dose of Gratitude", living with gratitude helps us to manage stress better, cope with problems more effectively and boosts our immune systems. Grateful people tend to be more optimistic and aware of the blessings in their lives and tend to take better care of themselves by exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet and taking care of healthcare needs. Those facing surgery or health issues tend to have better health outcomes when maintaining a positive attitude. When approached with a positive perspective, adversity can promote a sense of gratitude. As Thanksgiving Day approaches, here are some suggestions for developing an "Attitude of Gratitude": Reflect on what you are grateful for each day, reframe situations by maintaining a positive attitude and keep a gratitude journal.
