tenn words

WUOT and the UT College of Social Work are excited to launch an ambitious, original crowd-sourcing/journalism/community engagement experiment in May.

The 'tenn words' project empowers East Tennesseans to identify and define their fears, challenges and hopes for this region.

Here's how it works:  Participants at our 'tenn words' traveling exhibit are asked to answer a single question in ten words or less (our first question is "What Keeps You Up At Night?").   The responses are written on a small slip of paper and are posted on the wall of the exhibit.  As passersby read the posted responses, the wall becomes a gathering point for mutual understanding and discussion.

Over time, the responses are cataloged and analyzed by students from the UT College of Social Work for overarching trends and interesting outliers. The results are used to guide WUOT's Special News programming, including documentaries, news series and feature stories.

Please look for our exhibit May 16 at this year's International Biscuit Festival in downtown Knoxville.  And stay tuned to WUOT in the coming months to learn more about this exciting new project.

The Method

Hosted by Brandon Hollingsworth, The Method is a series that explores the intersection of science and society. In modern journalism, science reporting often repeats the material in press releases or studies without engaging in the critical thinking that defines the scientific method.
