Annual fund drive starts Oct. 27

Emily Jernigan is a WUOT fan

Time flies by when you are having fun, and we sure have been having a blast at WUOT!

Between retirements, new additions to our staff, and the replacement of several pieces of critical equipment including a new transmitter, this summer has been full of changes. But one thing remains the same--how much we rely on support from members like YOU. In fact, more than 42% of our funding--primarily used to pay for the programs you enjoy every day--comes from listeners just like you!

That's why we'll be asking for your support from Oct. 27 to Nov. 1 during our annual fall fund drive.

Of course, you don't have to wait for the fund drive to donate to make your pledge. To show your support today, please go to our website to make your donation. You also can email Membership Coordinator Jennie Caissie or call her at (865) 974-9558.

Join the fun: Volunteer!

Hey!  Looks like you're answering phones, Lucille Griffo, Anne Dungan and David Hamilton!
Looking for another way to show your support for WUOT? Why not join in the fun as a volunteer? Station volunteers help with a variety of tasks throughout the year, including answering phones, and sending letters and gifts during the two annual drives. If you're interested in lending your talents to WUOT, contact Jennie Caissie to get involved.

What do YOU think?

WUOT is participating in a research project from the University of South Carolina, and we need your input. The study is designed to learn more about people who listen to NPR programs. Findings may help determine if a sense of community among listeners affects support for public radio, and can provide direction on how stations can be more involved in the communities we serve.

To share your thoughts, please fill out an online survey by Sunday, Oct 5. It should take less than 10 minutes. At the end, you'll have the option of providing your email address to be entered in a drawing for a $100 gift card, but it is NOT required to participate, and this information will not be shared with anyone. We'll let you know of any project findings once they have been reported to WUOT. Thanks your help to make public radio even better!

WUOT hires first 'outside' underwriting coordinator

After years of contemplation and planning, WUOT is pleased to announce a new staff position designed to increase underwriting revenue. Dawn Goodall, a public radio enthusiast and former account executive at a local TV station, joined the WUOT staff Sept. 29 as an "outside" underwriting coordinator.

While Cindy Hassil will continue to handle incoming sales inquiries and manage existing accounts, Dawn will be spending most of her time outside the station, visiting organizations throughout our listening area, sharing the benefits of program underwriting and bringing new business to the station.

"The precarious nature of federal funding for public broadcasting makes it imperative for WUOT to grow its annual membership, endowment and underwriting income," Director Regina Dean said. "This position is an integral part of our plans to increase funding and be better positioned for potential funding cuts, and we're thrilled to have someone with Dawn's experience join our team."

Dawn is a graduate of the 'other' UT (the University of Texas) and recently returned to Knoxville after spending a few years in Texas. She enjoys hiking and camping in the mountains and is thrilled to be back in K'town. Please join us in welcoming Dawn to WUOT Public Radio!

WUOT welcomes new classical hosts

WUOT is pleased to announce that Whitney Dodds and Kevin Richard Doherty have joined the classical music staff.

Whitney steps into Allan Ellstrom's shoes as our new Afternoon Concert host/producer. A born-and-bred Buckeye, Whitney hails from Ohio, but is happy to call Tennessee her new home. After receiving a music business degree from Otterbein College, Whitney went on to earn a master's degree in vocal performance with a specialization in singing health from The Ohio State University. Master's in hand, she wanted to try as many jobs as possible, so she did everything from teaching at two private universities in central Ohio to conducting voice lessons for high school students. Whitney is excited to be in Knoxville. In her spare time, she investigates all of the local cuisine and entertainment she can find.

You'll hear Kevin on the weekends as WUOT's Early Morning Concert host/producer. A native of M
assapequa (Long Island), N.Y., he is a performer of art song, opera and musical theater. Kevin's passion as a performer is to present classical music in interesting ways to make it accessible to a wider and more diverse audience. He has been involved in opera education and outreach since 2008, and has performed opera for thousands of students and adults across the south and southeast. Since moving to Knoxville in 2010, Kevin has been a regular with Knoxville Opera, Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and the University of Tennessee School of Music's Opera Theatre.

Enter WUOT's David Sedaris contest

A guy walks into a bar car and...

From here, that story can take many turns. And when the guy is David Sedaris, the possibilities are endless.

With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, Sedaris has become one of America's preeminent humor writers. In his newest book is Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls, he remembers his father's dinner attire (shirtsleeves and underpants), his first colonoscopy, and the time he considered buying the skeleton of a murdered Pygmy.

But even more fun than reading Sedaris' work is listening to him recount the stories of his life on stage. Here's your chance to win two tickets to do just that Oct. 23 at the Bijou Theatre!

To enter, email your name, address and phone number to  Cindy Hassil with the subject line SEDARIS by 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10. We'll do a drawing, and two lucky people will win a pair of tickets to see the master humorist live at the Bijou! Winners will be notified by email, and tickets will be held at Will Call the night of the show.
