Hidden Kitchens on Morning Edition

The Kitchen Sisters return with a new installment of their series on the food, folklore and culture that creates community around the table. Hidden Kitchens begins with a visit to farms in Sicily, where small farmers have taken over confiscated Mafia lands. Mob influence in Sicily is still heavy, and Mafia ties have threatened the new olive groves. But many small merchants are also standing up to the Mob, refusing to pay protection money at their ice cream and deli stands.

Cozinha Popular is a social project designed to revitalise the multicultural community of Mouraria, promoting the sharing of experiences, building community, and providing employment and access to food for those in need.

Airs Tuesdays in May and June on Morning Edition, beginning May 6.

For Alan Cumming, Life Is (Once Again) A Cabaret

Alan Cumming has starred in the musical Cabaret three times - a 1993 London production, a Tony-winning 1998 Broadway revival, and a new Broadway revival - and it hasn't gotten old. "It's so energetic and it just takes up every single element of being an actor," he tells Fresh Air's Terry Gross.

An Eater's-Eye View Of Literature's Most Iconic Meals
Daphne Du Maurier's feast in the opening pages of Rebecca is just one of 50 tableaux collected in Fried's new book, Fictitious Dishes: An Album of Literature's Most Memorable Meals. It's full of photographs, all shot from above and each one of food - literary food, to be exact.

Krulwich Wonders: Come Dance With Me
One song, danced two totally different ways. First, two dancers who sculpt the giddiness, the beats, onto their rhyming bodies. Then a second version, this time, a crazy story. Vive la difference!

WUOT Meets Spring Drive Goal - Thank You!

WUOT is best Thanks to YOU, WUOT Public Radio's spring fund drive was a big success, and your generous contributions will ensure that this station continues to thrive! Here are some of the things you made possible:

  • Listeners pledged $150,000 to help us meet our goal for the six-day drive.
  • Thanks to the 436 pledges we received on Community Partnership Day April 4, an anonymous donor will give $5,000 to Youth LIFT  to help homeless children succeed through education outreach.
  • WUOT's amazing volunteers worked 172 shifts answering phones! That doesn't even include the terrific people who picked up food, entered pledge data, and even called their friends and family to ensure WUOT met the goals for the week.
  • Because of your 379 pledges during the Food for Fido Community Partnership on Pet Pledge Day April 2, Frankie and Sunny the dogs (with help from their friend, Mike) will donate 379 pounds of food to the Humane Society of the Tennessee Valley and $379 to WUOT.
  • Dogs beat the cats by two tails during Pet Pledge Day. Woof!
  • The following organizations donated food, bottled water and toll-free lines during the week:

Tupelo Honey Café, Knoxville

Thank you, EVERYONE, for making WUOT possible!

P.S. If you missed your chance to pledge during the fund drive, don't despair - you can donate online right now!
