Tell Me More Re-Joins WUOT-2 Program Lineup - Weekdays from 7-8 p.m.

When a story emerges in the news, Tell Me More asks, "Are we getting the truth? Is that real?" Program host Michel Martin says Tell Me More is "a place to talk about important issues facing the country, a place to hear from people who intrigue you but whom you'd never meet otherwise, a place to hear people who are grappling with the issues that we face."

Martin joined NPR in January 2006 to develop Tell Me More. Before joining the network, she previously worked for ABC News, the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal.

Tell Me More was part of our initial program schedule when WUOT-2 launched in 2009, but was dropped when NPR moved the broadcast time from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. weekdays. You can now hear it weekdays from 7 to 8 p.m.

Tell Me More takes the place of The Story. The host of The Story, Dick Gordon, has hung up his microphone and headed back north to be with family. We wish him the very best, and we hope you enjoy Tell Me More!

Fund Drive Results

thank you image Thanks to everyone who made WUOT's fall 2013 fund drive a successful campaign! We raised a little over $162K, and that's great!

That amount is actually about 82% of the goal we set for the drive, but it's not too late to help us make up the difference. You can visit WUOT's website to make a gift to the public radio station that gives you amazing programming every day of the year. It's also not too late to ask for a thank-you gift if your donation qualifies for one, AND you can count your donation as part of your end-of-year, tax-deductible charitable gifts!

The dust is still settling, but here are some results from the drive:

  • About 120 volunteers donated their time and talents to help us with everything from answering phones and entering pledge data to picking up food and mailing out pledge reminders!
  • For the first time in several drives, the cats dominated on Pet Pledge Day, bringing in 384 votes to the dogs' 350. Meow.
  • To encourage listeners to give, we had generous challenges from individuals including Kevin and Samantha Pack of Runners Market, Jenny Hines and Tom Jester, Jeff Mellor and Doris Gove, and one anonymous donor (you know who you are)! Staffers Cindy Hassil and Todd Steed also will cough up some cash for their challenges!
  • We're happy to report that WUOT blew its goal of 400 pledges out of the water with 437 pledges on Community Partnership Day! Thanks to everyone who pledged (sometimes for the second or third time that week), Delta Dental of Tennessee is going to donate $5K to East Tennessee Children's Hospital for Project ADAM Tennessee. The program provides education and equipment to schools, and funds will be used to purchase four new automated external defibrillators for area elementary schools. That is VERY cool!

Each time WUOT has a fund drive, we are humbled by and so thankful for the generous individuals and organizations that make this station possible. We are proud to serve you. Thank you, everyone!

Holiday Programming

holly left WUOT is very happy to bring you what we feel is a comprehensive holiday programming offering, if there is such a thing! This year's schedule delivers holiday music from the St. Olaf College Choir, the Paul Winter Consort, and John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, as well as from new and emerging artists featured on the programs All Songs Considered for the Holidays and Jazz Piano Christmas XXIX.

If you get a moment during the holidays, please let Greg Hill know what shows you like (and which you don't). Your comments will be of great help as he plans holiday programming for 2014. Email Greg at ghill5@utk.edu.

FROM THE NATIONAL DESKS

Deliver De Letter, De Sooner De Better

For most of us, it's been years since we last wrote a letter, and most U.S. homes receive only one letter every two months. But some people are determined to save the lost art of letter writing, and the feeling of personal connection a handwritten letter conveys.

Your Toddler Really Is Smarter Than a 5-Year-Old
Very small children can reason abstractly, researchers say, and are able to infer the relationships between objects that elude older children who get caught up on the concreteness of things.

Small Firms May Soon Turn to Crowdfunding

Crowdfunding is popular among musicians, filmmakers and artists looking for a way to finance their next project. Now the Securities and Exchange Commission is considering rules that, for the first time, would allow small companies to solicit investments over the Internet and sell shares to the general public.
