PRNDI Conference Offers Education, Celebrates Excellence
Director of News Content Matt Shafer Powell recently attended a Public Radio News Directors Inc. (PRNDI) conference in Cleveland, Ohio. The two-day event allows reporters and news directors from around the country to discuss, dissect and commiserate, as well as celebrate some of the best work in the county. We're very proud to say that WUOT's work was recognized with four first-place awards!
Here's what Matt had to say about the conference:
"It's always a nice opportunity to weigh your newsroom's policies and direction against that of your peers. I always come back from the annual conference with new ideas and a greater appreciation for the obligation we all have to report with accuracy, responsibility and inclusiveness.
Every PRNDI conference addresses a wide range of topics of interest to reporters. This year's event featured sessions that gave guidance on everything from using creative sound techniques to learning how to handle the stress that naturally accompanies your coverage of a major (and often catastrophic) news event.
I also had the tremendous opportunity to participate as a trainer in a preconference session designed to help the next generation of public radio news reporters refine their storytelling skills. It's inspiring to see young reporters entering the business with a passion and eagerness that ensures the integrity of public radio for decades to come.

The highlight of the annual conference is the awards presentation. NPR's Weekend Edition host, Scott Simon, emceed this year's event, during which public radio recognized the best work of 2012. I'm proud to report WUOT took top honors in the Small Newsroom category. Without a Net: Voices of the Working Poor earned first place awards in the Series and Documentary categories, while Mother and Child took first place in the News Feature and Best Writing categories.
You've heard it from me before, but I'm genuine when I suggest that this type of recognition is simply not possible without our generous members. A PRNDI award is an opportunity for us to show the rest of the country how committed and supportive WUOT listeners are. Thank you for giving us that chance."
You can listen to both of these award-winning series on WUOT's new website. Again, thank you for making what WUOT does possible!

WUOT-2 Features New Daytime Lineup in July
Earlier this spring, NPR announced that Talk of the Nation would cease production at the end of June. Talk of the Nation has aired on WUOT-2 since mid-2009.
While we know many listeners will miss the show, we're excited about the opportunity to bring you some new programs that will keep you well informed through the afternoon and on to NPR's All Things Considered at 4 p.m. on WUOT.
The new WUOT-2 weekday daytime lineup will start July 1 at noon with a revamped, live, two-hour version of Here and Now. Host Robin Young will be joined by a new co-host, Jeremy Hobson. If you think his name sounds familiar, you're right--Hobson has been heard as a recent host of the Marketplace Morning Report, which airs weekday mornings at 5:51 and 7:51 during NPR's Morning Edition. Here and Now will offer the latest breaking news as well as in-depth feature stories from NPR reporters.
Following Here and Now, you'll hear To the Point. The hour-long, live show hosted by Warren Olney starts at 2 p.m. and will keep you up-to-date on the latest news from around the world. The program also spends a good portion of time dissecting the hot-button issues of the day, from politics to technology, from both sides.
As a lead-in to NPR's All Things Considered, PRI's The World with host Marco Werman will shift from 7 p.m. to 3 p.m. Like the shows preceding it, PRI's The World is a live, topical program, only with a more worldwide lens. The Story with Dick Gordon, heard now weekdays at 1 p.m., will move to 7 p.m.
We hope you enjoy the new weekday daytime lineup on WUOT-2. If you have questions about the changes, please contact Greg Hill, director of programming and operations, at (865) 974-4905 or via email at ghill5@utk.edu.
