Jessel receives TEA School Bell Award
WUOT reporter Christine Jessel has received a School Bell Award from the Tennessee Education Association (TEA) for Outstanding Coverage by an Individual Reporter.
The award recognizes Jessel's "consistent and thorough coverage" of East Tennessee's public schools. Jessel began covering education issues for WUOT in early 2011 as a reporter and producer for the Southern Education Desk, a project supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
TEA School Bell Awards are open to reporters, hosts, editors and news stations across Tennessee. Media representatives must first receive a letter of recommendation from a local teachers' association to be considered. A panel of judges from both inside and outside the education field then selects winners based on "coverage of education news and issues as well as the tremendous role they play in shaping public opinion."
TEA is the state's largest professional organization representing over 46,000 elementary and secondary teachers, school administrators, education support professionals, higher education faculty and students preparing to become teachers.

WUOT series wins Regional Murrow Award
WUOT has won a 2013 Regional Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTNDA) for Mother and Child.
The three-part series aired in 2012 and examined the ways in which prescription drug abuse is destroying that sacred bond. Each piece profiled one East Tennessee woman who has seen or experienced the effects of prescriptions drug abuse. The series was produced by WUOT's director of news content, Matt Shafer Powell.
A record number of entries were submitted to the regional awards. Judges selected winners from 13 U.S. regions and around the world. WUOT won for Writing in the Small Market Category of Region 8, which includes Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and West Virginia.
Regional winners automatically are entered in the national competition, which will be judged this summer. A complete list of the 2013 Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards winners is online at rtdna.org.
