Volunteer Potluck Celebration

Kevin Bailey and Jennifer Lewis

Tom Brokaw said, "It's easy to make a buck. It's a lot tougher to make a difference." WUOT's volunteers certainly make a huge difference for the station and provide valuable support throughout the year.

About 60 volunteers and staff got together for WUOT's fifth annual potluck on Feb. 5.  It was a chance to celebrate another successful year for public radio with wonderful food, camaraderie and conversation.

Volunteer Roy Carter expressed a common sentiment, "I always enjoy talking with volunteers twice a year at the fund drives, but I've never gotten to know them very well because we're working. This was a chance to spend time with familiar faces and meet new ones. I really hope I can come again."

A big thank you to everyone who attended the potluck. We are grateful for all our volunteers and their tremendous support!

Did I Hear What I Thought I Heard?
When a remark about the NRA by a sports commentator was edited out of later re-broadcasts and the Web edition, some listeners questioned NPR's editing policies. NPR's Ombudsman, Edward Schumacher-Matos (pictured), asked the newsroom to explain this edit and the policy in general.

The Show That Shocked the Nation
On Feb. 17, 1913, an art exhibition opened in New York City that shocked the country, changed our perception of beauty and had a profound effect on artists and collectors. The International Exhibition of Modern Art - which came to be known, simply, as the Armory Show - marked the dawn of Modernism in America. It was the first time the phrase "avant-garde" was used to describe painting and sculpture.

A Pictorial Moonlight Serenade
Since the human eye requires light to discern color, cameras can reveal a nighttime world we'd never otherwise see. Husband-and-wife photographers Diane Cook and Len Jenshel use long-exposure photography to transform moonlit gardens into soft, romantic visual poetry.
