What Does WUOT Mean to You?

Alissa, Maggie and Bailey
From left: Alissa Reeves, Maggie Barta and Bailey Callaghan

"Every day I consider our family lucky to have a teenager who loves WUOT as much as her parents!" says WUOT member Alissa Reeves. "She has grown up informed about opera, literature, science and world music. Thank you, WUOT, for being a source of our family's continued learning."

How does WUOT inform you about your community and world? If you can't imagine your life without it, please join Alissa and show your support for the station during our Fall Fund Drive Monday, Nov. 12, through Saturday, Nov. 17. There's no need to wait until the drive to show how much WUOT means to you. You can donate right now and help WUOT continue to air all of your favorite programs like All Things Considered, classical and jazz music, and Wait, Wait...Don't Tell Me!

Thanks in advance for your support!

WUOT Staff and Friends Volunteer at the Zoo!

Do nonprofits take personal time to help other nonprofits? WUOT does! On Sunday, Oct. 28, some WUOT staff and volunteers gathered to support another cause in town - the Knoxville Zoo's Boo at the Zoo trick-or-treating fundraiser. The WUOT team dressed in a variety of creative and homemade public radio-themed costumes (of course!) from Car Talk to Madama Butterfly to Hearts of Space.

The folks who joined in the fun were Maggie Barta, Alissa Reeves, Sandra McLean, Chuck and Margie Cuthbertson, Lisa Beckman, Bailey Callaghan and Melony Dodson Maness.  WUOT 's group braved the 45-degree weather and the rain to assist at the most popular treat post featuring Krispy Kreme Doughnuts as well as direct attendees. Everyone had a wonderful - and very cold! - time and looks forward to volunteering again at the event next year.

See more great costumes and photos on Facebook.

 Arguing Over Antiquities
A thousand-year-old statue is at the heart of a battle between Sotheby's auction house and the governments of the United States and Cambodia. The governments say the statue was looted; Sotheby's says this can't be proved; and the resulting court case could change how collectors and museums acquire artifacts and governments recover national treasures.

SED News

The Southern Education Desk is exploring "turnaround schools" - failing schools that have turned themselves around and found success. SED wants to profile these schools and learn firsthand how they overcame adversity.

If you, your child or someone you know has been part of a turnaround school, SED would love to hear from you - not only to learn about your experiences with turnaround schools but also to solicit your help in finding suitable schools to profile. Share your thoughts at southerneducationdesk.org/turnaround.
