Best of Chico

Best of Chico

"When to trees their summer splendor
Change to raiment red and gold,
When the summer moon turns mellow,
And the nights are getting cold;
When the squirrels hide their acorns,
And the woodchucks disappear,
Then we know that it is autumn,
Lovliest season of the year."
~Carol L. Riser, Autumn

November is a month for looking ahead and planning for the coming growing year. It's also the time of year to sit back and enjoy the changing of the season. The temps begin to cool, and it seems that time slows into the quietude of short Autumnal days.

November is also a time for thanks. Looking back on this past year I am personally so thankful for you, our wonderful customers. Your words of kindness and excitement about our nursery keep us motivated. The Best of Chico was a real topper to another wonderful year. We are so fortunate to live in a community that takes pride and understands the importance of supporting and appreciating local businesses.

November
Giving Thanks

This month marks the two year anniversary for our newsletter. Those of you who have been reading over the past several months have seen this evolve into what it is today. I welcome your comments on how to provide you with what you anticipate and enjoy most about the newsletter. If you think we are missing something, please email me; I welcome your feedback. We strive to be your complete gardening destination in the North Valley-and we have fun doing so as well. I, along with the whole staff, am here for you. And we're all thankful for the opportunity. ~Courtney

"If it is true that one of the greatest pleasures of gardening lies in looking forward, then the planning of next years beds and borders must be one of the most agreeable occupations in the gardener's calendar. This should make October and November particularly pleasant months, for then we may begin to clear our borders, to cut down those sodden and untidy stalks, to dig up and increase our plants, and to move them to other positions where they will show up to greater effect. People who are not gardeners always say that the bare beds of winter are uninteresting; gardeners know better, and take even a certain pleasure in the neatness of the newly dug, bare, brown earth." ~Vita Sackvill-West

Why is it so important to

rake and remove my leaves?

Removing fallen leaves and general garden debris helps prevent pests and fungal diseases from carrying over to next year. If leaves and debris are left behind this creates habitat for disease and pests to survive the winter months comfortably.

Insects such as Slugs, Snails, and Coddling Moths along with fungal diseases such as Rust, Anthracnose, and Blight can be somewhat avoided the following season by removing and raking leaves this time of year. While you rake, just remember the good you're doing yourself and your yard.

It's Almost Copper Time

Liqui-Cop
Liqui-Cop

Spraying Copper helps prevent fungal infections on Fruit trees and other desirables in your yard. Typically-for fruit trees in particular-this product should be applied three times a year. A general way to help remember is to spray around the holidays: Thanksgiving, around the time the tree has lost all leaves and is dormant; Christmas, for the winter application; and finally, close to Valentines day, when buds have formed but are not yet open. So be proactive and avoid some problems with preventative measures such as this.
