Magnolia Gift & Garden Newsletter

     October 2012

Autumn has arrived
It's beginning to look like Fall has arrived

Just over a week ago Fall officially began. However,
in typical North Valley fashion, the weather pays no mind to such dates.  We can only hope that relief from the heat will arrive sooner than later.

When I think of  Fall I get excited. This is my favorite time of year. It is a time of reprieve from the long hot North Valley summer.  In the garden the trees begin to shed their tired leaves and,

cheery Pansies, Violas and Mums are able to be planted in the yard. Pumpkins begin to appear throughout the neighborhood and sweaters are pulled out of hibernation.

Fall is also a wonderful time to plant. (as we talk about in the newsletter later) Happy Fall to you all and we hope you are able to get a chance to enjoy this beautiful season.

Why is Fall a great time to plant?

Planting Season

In Northern California, it is a season of relief from summer's relentless heat and arid winds, and of preparation for winter. This is the ideal window for establishing trees, shrubs, and perennials.

Moderate temperatures and shorter days allow plants to conserve water, and to divert energy to root development without the strain of flowering or fruiting. Whether replacing an existing landscape specimen or installing a new selection, amending the soil in the root zone will support more rapid establishment. The planting hole should be two times as deep and wide as the container of your new plant whenever possible. Adequate and regular water, regardless of the drought-tolerance of the species, is essential until winter rains begin in earnest.

Pug Words of Wisdom

 October To Dos

-Plant a tree, shrub or perennial. Fall is a great time to do so.

-Switch out Summer Annuals for Fall Annual color such as Ornamental Kale/Cabbage, Mums, and Pansies.

-Start seeds-it's still not too late! Kale, Arugula, Beets, Sweet Peas, Radishes, and so many more can be planted now. We have a great selection too!

-Get in another dose of EB Stone Organic Fertilizer

(Simon is one of Chris and Courtney's three dogs. He loves dishing out wisdom he has picked up while spending time in the garden.)

Looking Ahead

The holidays are just around the corner. We are excited to soon be carrying a NEW shipment of Statuary, Pottery and many more gift items for the gardener on your Christmas list this year.
Keeping Perennials Fresh

Keepin it Fresh

Now is a great time to "freshen up" your perennials such as Lavender, Gaura, Yarrow, Gallardia and Salvia. Lots of perennials can get a bit "leggy" this time of year. Pruning them back a bit will encourage fresh new growth and keeps them nice and tidy.  If you are unsure about other perennials in your landscape besides the ones we have listed just ask us. You know where to find us!

Open 7 Days a Week!

The Yule Logs will once again be playing at our four year anniversery celebration December 2nd! Lots of fun for the whole family! More details soon...
