Lady Bug Larvae
|
Our good friends the Lady Bugs are very beneficial in the garden. Lady Bugs consume pests to your garden such as Soft-Scale, Mealy Bug, and Spider Mite, as well as the eggs of the Potato Beetle, Corn Borer, and White Fly. While most of us can recognize a Lady Bug at a glance, the larvae of the Lady Bug may be mistaken for a pesky pest. These two critters in the photo above are different stages of the Lady Bug life cycle. So if you see them - leave them! They are our friends, not foes.

'White Gem' Gardenia
This dwarf sized Gardenia grows 1-2 feet tall and wide. Interesting star-like flowers are showy and fragrant. This beauty requires good drainage and afternoon shade in the North Valley.

"When the April wind wakes the call for the soil, I hold the plow as my only hold upon earth, and, as I follow through the fresh and fragrant furrow, I am planted with every foot-step, growing, budding, blooming into a spirit of spring."

Simon Says
March To-Dos

-Ready? Set? Grow! Veggie and Herb Garden time!
-Keep weeding! It's an ongoing battle but worth it.
-Mulch around existing and new plantings- Keeps those roots moist and conserves water.
-Deadhead spent bulb flowers but leave the foliage. The foliage may be a bit unsightly but it helps to produce food for the bulb through photosynthesis for next years growth.
-Pesky Aphids may begin to appear on the fresh new growth on your plants. Hosing them off with water should keep them away. Or, use Neem oil spray.
-Enjoy this beautiful weather. Rain or Shine it's going to be a beautiful Spring if you ask us!
(Simon is one of Chris and Courtney's three dogs. He loves dishing out wisdom he has picked up while spending time in the garden.)
