Ants, Taking Over the World!

Ant Farming

The Invasion

Okay, so they aren't taking over the world- but it sure seems like it sometimes. Ants are one of the most successful groups of insects on earth. In the garden they can be a pest because they "farm" insects such as Aphids, Mealybugs, and Scale on desirable plants. What this means is that the Ants place these insects on a branch to consume their sugary excretions, called Honeydew. Scientists have even found that Ants will sometimes bite the wings off of Aphids to keep them from leaving. Aphids and the other insects being farmed in turn receive protection from the Ants from predatory insects and parasites.

What does this mean for the gardener? Well, in short: No good. Citrus trees are often found to be a favorite of farming Ants. Spraying with chemicals is very undesirable, especially if you want to eat the fruit; instead, we have found consistantly blasting the affected branches with a hose to remove the insects every day works wonders. Clipping off the tips that are most affected really helps too, and scale insects left can simply be scraped off the branch or trunk. If you really feel the need to spray, Neem Oil is a good product and one we often recommend to use on edibles. We also have had great results with Safer brand Insecticidal Soap.

It is so important to keep your eye out for Ants. If you see them paying a lot of attention to a particular plant in your yard, try to get rid of them to avoid the farming infestation.
