Friend Not Foe

Lady Larvae

Lady Bug Larvae

Our good friends the Lady Bugs are very benificial in the garden. Lady Bugs consume pests to your garden such as Soft-Scale, Mealy Bug, and Spider Mite, as well as the eggs of the Potato Beetle, Corn Borer, and White Fly. While most of us can recognize a Lady Bug at a glance, the larvae of the Lady Bug may be mistaken for a pesky pest. These two critters in the photo above are different stages of the Lady Bug life cycle. So if you see them - leave them! They are our friends, not foes.

Wilder Currants
'Wilder' Currants

Have you ever tasted a Currant? I hadn't until our 'Wilder' Currants (as seen in the picture) were ripe this month. They are tart, juicy, and tasty! This is an exciting time of year at the nursery as the edible garden fills out with the promise of a bountiful and delicious future. The Peach and Apricot trees are forming a tasty harvest, and the berry bushes swelling with mouth watering fruit. Strawberries, Carrots, Potatoes and herbs Cilantro, Mint, and Basil smell and taste amazing straight from the garden to the plate. If you haven't already, this is your last window of opportunity to get those warm season veggies in! We can give you some tips for companion plantings that will add beauty and purpose for a healthy and happy garden environment.

Carrots Love Tomatoes
Carrots Love Tomatoes

Did you know that a successful garden requires some thought given to companion planting? Growing complimentary plants next to each other can repel harmful insects and attract helpful ones, as well as bring a natural balance to your garden. Also, did you know that the fennel plant has an inhibiting effect on bush beans and tomatoes? These great bits of info fill the book.

We carry the classic companion planting guide Carrots Love Tomatoes. This wonderful book can be found in our Gift Shop. This is a must have for all gardeners!

Why Quality Pays Off

If you ever visit Magnolia and find co-owner Chris Hunter in a somewhat petulant mood, don't take it personally. It just means the north wind has been blowing. Sited as we are on the outskirts of Chico, the nursery frequently takes the brunt of the incoming weather, and in particular, the monotonous weeks of driving wind that often attend Spring and Summer in the Northstate. But despite the fact that our grounds are not enclosed like most franchise garden centers, our plants are far less susceptible to ill-humors than their human caretakers under these harsh conditions. Why this exceptional resilience? Well, that stems from the way we do business. Click to read more...
