A Touch of the Orient

Acer 'Waterfall'
'Waterfall' Japanese Maple

Among the loveliest landscape specimens in old town Chico, the Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum) has become an iconic Oriental accent.  With slow, hardy growth and lacy foliage, this diverse species ranges from stooped, gnarled pondside specimens to upright trees perfectly scaled to the urban backyard.  Long-lived, these are also invaluable in containers and shaded corners, requiring little pruning and providing a striking architectural element in the winter garden.  While most of the cultivars available need some shelter from the summer sun in the North Valley, there are several new varieties which tolerate longer exposure.

Since its inception, Magnolia has offered an extensive and unusual selection of Japanese Maples.   One major division may be made between the many varieties that come through the nursery in a year.  Laceleaf-type maples generally exhibit the distinctive mounding, trailing form as they age, and remain fairly small.

Mosquito Fish

Well, it's that time of year again! The Butte County Mosquito and Vector Control has supplied the nursery with Mosquito fish. The fish are free, but you must bring your own container to take them home. You only need to take 3-4 fish--this is usually plenty to control Mosquito Larva.

Endless Summer Hydrangea

Endless Summer
Endless Summer Hydrangea

Mother's Day is Sunday, May 8th, and if you're still racking your brain over a gift that shows mom how much you love her, consider an Endless Summer™ Hydrangea.  Just arrived, we have a huge inventory of these beauties in their prime, and ready to put on a show for the special day.

Endless Summer™ thrives in partially shaded locations, and makes a spectacular container specimen as well as a long-lived landscape plant.  Reaching three to six feet high and wide at maturity depending on the cultivar, this rounded shrub blooms continuously from late Spring through early Fall in Chico and much of the Northstate, producing massive flower clusters on both the old and new wood each year.  Provide rich, well-drained soil and regular water, and this vigorous performer will become the focal point of the yard or patio.  And with a record like that, who's to say you shouldn't buy one for yourself too?

Would you please take a moment to do this quick survey? It would be much appreciated!

"Gardening is about enjoying the smell of things growing in the soil, getting dirty without feeling guilty, and generally taking the time to soak up a little peace and serenity."

Hit the Bottle

Already a top-shelf destination for gorgeous imported pottery, Magnolia has been expanding its selection of container trimmings. Bottles-decorative mulches made from 100% recycled, tumbled bottle glass, that is.

An eye-catching display on the nursery grounds featuring a river of azure and turquoise glass winding through a xeriscape of sedum was such a favorite with customers last year that our modest offering of colors and sizes was outstripped by demand. The nursery soon made full-fledged foray into decorative mulches, and now offers 15 different recycled glass options, 12 kinds of gravel and rock, and several unique choices of glazed pottery shards to add resilient, year-around color to any container garden or planting bed.
