Greetings,
Well, spring sure came in with a bang this year. Rain is always welcome; the wind is less appreciated. Here at Magnolia, we are itching to start our warm season veggie gardens. My mouth waters when I think of the juicy tomato and basil sandwiches I will consume, the glossy eggplants dangling heavily under felted leaves, the tangy scent of ripening melons, and that first batch of pesto to come.
As a result of the strong winds that we experienced over the winter, there is a lot of cleaning up to do around the nursery. In the upcoming months, you will see a "face-lift" getting underway on our grounds. We hope all of your homes and gardens emerged fairly unscathed from such a blustery March. Together, we are looking forward to a more placid, though no less beautiful crescendo of spring ahead. |

What is with the Mushroom?
| | Mushroom Fun |
If a curiously spotted dome of tangerine orange and golden yellow rising over the wall of the nursery has recently arrested your eye as you approached East Avenue on Mariposa, then let us put your mind at rest. No, the Mothership hasn't landed. The giant metal mushroom that has arrived on our grounds is a piece of California history. Nursery co-owner Chris Hunter is an avid fan of American Pickers; a discriminating customer well-known to Northstate antique dealers.
Additionally, the young (or young at heart) are sure to discover the two brightly colored ladybug cars in our retail display area. After a decade and a remarkable chain of events, these cheery arthropods are about to be reunited with their siblings. To read more click on the pic....

Now is the time to plant Dahlias
| | Dahlias | April is a great time to plant Dahlia tubers. These beautiful flowers are always a good show. In the North Valley some protection from hot afternoon sun is best. They do need at least 6 hours of morning sun. Colors vary from rosy pink to variegated white and purple and even red, in varieties such as, 'Big Wow' 'Mom's Special' 'Bodacious' 'Fascination' Blue Bell' Marble Bell' and more.

Spring Bulb Maintenance
| | Spring Bulbs |
It is time to deadhead those bulbs. Be sure to leave the foliage. The foliage may be a bit unsightly but it helps produce food for the bulb through photosynthesis for next years growth. We recommend to fertilize spring bulbs in fall and early spring with EB Stone Organics Rose and Flower Food. |

Featured Color of the Month
Mojito
|

| | Featured color of April | Available in the Egg Pot style, as pictured, this fresh but muted green with hints of coffee and straw is a lovely accent to Modern living spaces, Eclectic or Tropical gardens, or Xeriscapes. Use it to set off blacks, bronzes and dark purples to advantage, or as a counterpoint to tans. Try it with Black Magic Elephant Ears, or Dusky Chief New Zealand Flax. |
New Arrivals-Statuary
| | Just In! Statuary! |
We have just received a new exciting statuary order. Many Asian inspired pieces and some whimcycle ones such as a baby T-Rex and fun Rapa Nui faces. |

It Isn't Dirt...
It is a seemingly harmless interposition of terms, but it carries a weighty implication. Never ask a gardener how their dirt is. Healthy soil is arguably worth its weight in gold. Perhaps the most crucial component of vigorous gardens and vibrant ecosystems, this oft underappreciated substrate is responsible for anchoring, nourishing, hydrating and allowing atmospheric gasses to enter and leave the plant. It follows that establishing or supporting a healthy garden starts with sound soil management.
