 | | Globes and Glass @ Magnolia | Greetings!
The pallid sun is peeking through the clouds, but on earth, Autumn is losing ground in its perennial rivalry with Winter. A chilly breeze is stirring the frost-nipped maple leaves that cling stiffly to branches drained of vitality. Shoppers wend through the crowds, each putting away goods in anticipation of the approaching season. In the nursery, the living Christmas trees have arrived to herald colder days ahead. And with winter comes the impending season of mistletoe and madness.
Columnist Dave Barry wryly described the holidays as "that very special time of year when we join with our loved ones in sharing centuries-old traditions such as trying to find a parking space at the mall. We traditionally do this in my family by driving around the parking lot until we see a shopper emerge from the mall, then we follow her, in very much the same spirit as the Three Wise Men, who 2,000 years ago followed a star, week after week, until it led them to a parking space." All too true? Winter is a resting season in the garden, for gardeners and plants alike; a time of slower growth and subtler beauty. Consider skipping the commercial retail circuit this year in favor of some small-town hospitality and an exclusive gift selection.

Regardless of their horticultural inclination, yard art makes a wonderful gift that can be appreciated all year. Our handmade Whimcycle collection is crafted of 100% recycled metal, and each piece is unique. Daisies and lilies, flying pigs, endearing rabbits or scrappy goats bring a touch of retro chic and a punch of color to the landscape. Rustic Hardware creatures are all-weather garden inhabitants with an earthy, organic aura. You will also find striking statuary, birdbaths and benches in the nursery for a recipient of more traditional tastes.

Winter Blooming Glory Camellias
 | | Setsugekka Camellia | For color through the coldest, darkest months, when even the tightly-held leaves of the dogwood have fled, the myriad Camellia varieties are an invaluable addition to the yard. For gardeners who associate the genus with the heavy-headed giants of their grandmother's yard, 'Yuletide' and 'Setsugekka' are a new paradigm, prolifically bearing single blooms with crimson or pink-tinged white petals, respectively, surrounding a brilliant gold crown. |
Living Christmas Trees
| | Living Christmas Trees at Magnolia | We have a great selection of Living Christmas Trees. If you decide to plant your tree after the Christmas holiday you are making a great addition to your yard. The role of conifers and other non-flowering evergreens in the garden is to provide structure and interest, texture and color. Most grow slowly, requiring little to no pruning, are neat, and equally well-suited to a container or a planting bed.
With one of the broadest selections of specialty evergreens in the North Valley, Magnolia is a destination for the distinctive. |
