Moderate temperatures and shorter days allow plants to conserve water, and to divert energy to root development without the strain of flowering or fruiting.  Whether replacing an existing landscape specimen or installing a new selection, amending the soil in the root zone will support more rapid establishment.  The planting hole should be two times as deep and wide as the container of your new plant whenever possible.  Adequate and regular water, regardless of the drought-tolerance of the species, is essential until winter rains begin in earnest.  Magnolia Gift & Garden carries a full line of soil amendments and organic fertilizers to help ensure successful fall plantings.

Best Time to Plant a Tree

An old Chinese proverb put it well: "The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago.  The second best time is now."  Autumn conjures up memories of brisk days and chilly nights, falling leaves and the first gentle rainstorms.  In Northern California, it is a season of relief from summer's relentless heat and arid winds, and of preparation for winter.  This is the ideal window for establishing trees, shrubs and perennials.
