A Note from Nils...

It was great to see so many parents at conferences. We had 94% of our parents come for conferences. Thank you for your support. Working together we can help each student be successful!

Thank you also for your support with the Entertainment Book and T-Shirt Fundraisers as well as Chick-Fil-A Night and Jason's Deli Night. We have raised more than $10,000 and will be able to provide funding for each teacher for his or her classroom as well as a variety of other projects that are in the PTO budget.

Our "Support the KC Royals/Hat Day" on Friday was a success!  We raised $262 for Caring Hearts!

PWS Fall Parties will be Friday. Please see the article in this newsletter for more details. Parking will be tight, and we encourage you to park at Complete High School and enter through the west office doors at PWS.

At the October Professional Development Day, our staff focused on the Kansas College and Career Ready Standards for math. Teachers reviewed the standards for each grade level, and discussed effective teaching strategies. Staff members also worked on implementation strategies for technology (K-2-I-Pads, 3rd Grade-Surface Tablets, and 4th/5th Grade-Chromebooks).

We are looking forward to a great November at PWS!!!!

3rd Grade Drug-Free Presentation

Third Grade at Pray-Woodman Elementary welcomed guest speaker Kyle Weis to their classrooms this month. He made a Drug-Free presentation on smoking. Kyle is a 2007 graduate of Maize High School and also attended Pray-Woodman for elementary school. He is in his last semester of Respiratory Therapy School at Newman University. Kyle brought two sets of pigs' lungs. One was a healthy pink set and the other, a set that had been smoked and smelled. The students were able to see how the healthy set could fill with air and function properly, while the smoked set did not fully inflate. The students donned gloves and touched the healthy set full of air. They learned many facts about smoking and cigarettes. Kyle gave the students a bag of candy at the beginning of the presentation and instructed them not to touch it. After the presentation he asked the students to give back the candy. They protested! He told them that's how it is for a smoker wanting a cigarette. You should have compassion for those who smoke because it is hard to stop. So don't start to begin with!
