A Year of Transition & 150 Historical Celebration

St. Patrick's Day 3/17/15

~Shortridge Alumni Association~

150th Sesquicentennial Historical Displays Available til June
In late January, the official showcase displays arrived at Shortridge along the main aisle of the school--across from the main lobby entrance--and in the display case adjacent to the Alumni Room 181.

Alumni, visitors and friends are encouraged to stop by the school to see check out the displays and a PowerPoint presentation that highlight historical events in the school's magnificent history and school's 150-year  history and legacy; some distinguished alumni are quoted, outstanding athletes and athletic individual and team accomplishments are mentioned, along with copies of the Daily Echo. A photo of the school under construction in 1927 was found and is shown.

Thanks to the Shortridge Alumni Association, and in particular Jarnell Burks-Craig, vice president on the Board, for her research efforts and collaboration with the Indiana Historical Society and the school's Media staff for a superb job to locate and organize school memorabilia. The displays will be available until June 2015 after the SAA annual meeting.

Introducing...
New Principal for Shortridge International Baccalaureate  High School, Fall 2015

Shane O'Day currently is the Principal of Gambold Preparatory Magnet High School with IPS. At a meeting of the IPS Board of School Commissioners,Tuesday, February 24, 2015, it was announced O'Day will become principal of Shortridge International Baccalaureate High School in Fall 2015.

O'Day has worked overseas in Mexico, Malaysia and most recently in China leading international schools offering the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme.  Shane is the current President of the State of Indiana Association of IB Schools, a Fulbright Memorial Scholar and an Eagle Scout.  He received a B.A. in political science from Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington; an M.Ed. from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia; an MBA from Thunderbird University in Glendale, Arizona; and his principal certification from Lehigh University in Lehigh, Pennsylvania.   Prior to becoming an educator, O'Day worked for his U.S. Senator in Washington D.C., Chase Manhattan Bank in New York and served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Uzbekistan.

The NewsBriefs editor recently made a visit to Gambold Prep Magnet H.S. and sat down with O'Day, Mark Shallenberger and other teachers to learn more about the IB Programme and share how the SAA plans to create a positive and solid support group when new students, teachers and administers come to Shortridge for the Fall 2015 school year. During a brief tour of the school, I found the students, teachers, office staff...everyone...delightful and excited about the merger. In the interim, this can be our time to share our history and legacy to these newcomers; to tell the Shortridge story and why we must preserve our heritage and history. They all appear eager to become new alumni of Shortridge High School. Also, Shortridge students welcomed the Gambold students recently for an open house tour of Shortridge ...a rousing success! Since the merger was announced in November, approximately 200 Shortridge students have chosen to remain at the school.

For more information, please contact Mr. Cooper as soon as possible for details: coopertc@myips.org or by phone: 317.965.8932.
