IPS School Board Decision - Shortridge International Baccalaureate High School, Fall 2015
The details have not been finalized, but the IPS School Board vote is in to realign some of its schools and specialty programs -- Shortridge will become Shortridge International Baccalaureate High School when school begins in the Fall 2015. Students and administrators from Gambold IB Preparatory School will move to the Shortridge building. The Law and Public Policy Magnet program will move to Arsenal Technical High School in an effort to combine a majority of the IPS magnet programs at one location.
In spite of the outcry of the Shortridge students, their parents, and community supporters, the vote to change the student population at Shortridge was made swiftly. IPS plans to offer assistance to students and their families during this transition period; specific details about this plans are being finalized..
IB PROGRAMS DEMONSTRATE ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE!
Statistically, IB programs operate and demonstrate academic excellence, which Shortridge has long been known for. With that one benchmark, ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE in mind, that has always been our hope for our alma mater. An IB program brings that level of excellence.
So, what does this all mean? WE HAVE BROUGHT OUR ALUMNI AND OTHER COMMUNITY LEADERS BACK TOGETHER IN SUPPORT OF SHORTRIDGE AND THE SCHOOL'S LEGACY and we propose to do so in the future. School administrations change, administrators and teachers change, students change, but as long as our alumni stick together, we will survive.
#1 The school WILL retain the Shortridge name
#2 The caliber of outstanding students may shift over time
#3 Participation of parents will likely increase
#4 Shortridge again rises to its significant place as one of the best in Indianapolis for secondary education
In his blog statement, dated 11/21/2014, Dr. Louis Ferebee, Superintendent of IPS, stated: "...
* Current 8-11th grade Shortridge students can choose to remain at that campus and are guaranteed a seat in the new IB program at Shortridge or the Law and Public Policy program at Tech.
* The Butler Early College program will remain at Shortridge
* Co-valedictorians and co-salutatorians will be honored through school year 2015-16
* Students participating in athletic programs can elect to stay at Shortridge and still participate
* Seventh and eighth grade students will be reassigned to magnet middle schools
* Transportation will be guaranteed for all students affected by the school changes
* High school Life Skills program will remain as is on the Shortridge campus
* The powerful legacy of school spirit at Shortridge will be honored and maintained as the school will retain the Blue Devils moniker and longstanding school colors."
The mission of our alumni association essentially remains the same: we will continue to reach out to our alumni to support the students enrolled in the building and educate this new population of the Shortridge legacy and history. Stay with us as we continue our future journey.
