IPS School Board Proposes Major Changes

At a briefing session of the IPS School Board Tuesday, November 11, 2014, the IPS Superintendent, Dr. Louis Ferebee, informed the IPS Education Center audience of proposed relocation changes to several local high schools for the school year 2015-16. Specifically, the IPS Board is recommending moving the Law and Public Policy magnet at Shortridge to Arsenal Technical High School, along with other high school magnet programs, to create a "mega" magnet system at one high school location. Other local high schools with magnet programs would be affected as well, including Broad Ripple with its media and mass communications magnet program; Key Learning Center would close.

Here's a link to an IBJ story from Chalkbeat Indiana.  It indicates there will be opportunity for public input next week.

http://www.ibj.com/articles/50446-ips-plan-would-close-key-shift-programs-at-four-schools?utm_source=ibj-daily&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=2014-11-12

This proposed move of the law magnet from Shortridge would "free up" the building for a move of an International Baccaleurate (IB) program currently at Gambold Preparatory High School on Indianapolis' northwest side. The SAA learned about a proposed merger more than a year ago; however, when the idea of moving the Gambold Prep IB program to Shortridge was first proposed, the Shortridge Alumni Association expressed some concerns at that time. Originally, the proposal was for both schools to occupy the same building. There were obvious concerns for two schools occupying the same space. Attempting to operate two small schools at the same location would not be a sustainable business model.

Now, it is proposed that instead of two distinct schools with totally different styles, curricula, schedules, names, school mascots, etc. operating under one roof, the superintendent is recommending moving the law and public policy magnet to Tech in order for the IB program to operate exclusively at Shortridge. Currently, there are less than 200 students in the Gambold Prep IB program.  Complete details regarding this proposal are not yet available.

IB PROGRAMS DEMONSTRATE ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE!

Statistically, IB programs operate and demonstrate academic excellence, which Shortridge has long been known for. With that one benchmark, ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE in mind, that has always been our hope for our alma mater. An IB program brings that level of excellence. Since 2009, Shortridge alumni, through our alumni association, have been quite active in supporting the school and the law and public policy magnet concept by:
* Serving on committees that created the Law and Public Policy program
* Contributing money for scholarships that the SAA administers; continuing to enhance our scholarship endowment
* Funding the school's membership in Dollars for Scholars to allow Shortridge students to find and qualify for additional scholarship money
* Donating money for specific programs such as the Echo, band, athletics, yearbook and student-led community clean-up projects
* Volunteering for school activities
* Enhancing the alumni room
* Creating displays for the Shortridge Alumni Hall of Fame to recognize Shortridge alumni for excellence in their professional careers and as community leaders.
* Creating the Shortridge Judicial Wall of Fame to honor those alumni who excelled in their professional careers in the judicial system; purchasing furnishings for the mock courtroom; renaming the courtroom for a Shortridge alumnus whose classmates wished to honor for his superior achievements in the judicial system in the State of Kentucky. That dedication and renaming of the courtroom was approved by the IPS School Board
* Working on the committee for the dedication of the new gym and Legacy basketball game between long-time rivals, Shortridge Blue Devils vs. Crispus Attucks Tigers now in its third year
* Planning a series of activities to celebrate Shortridge's 150th anniversary as the oldest public school in the State of Indiana (currently under way)
* Managing (and funding) the project to refurbish the school's courtyard
* Promoting the current Shortridge programs and needs through our alumni publications and website

So, what does this all mean? WE HAVE BROUGHT OUR ALUMNI AND OTHER COMMUNITY LEADERS BACK TOGETHER IN SUPPORT OF SHORTRIDGE AND THE SCHOOL'S LEGACY and we propose to do so in the future. School administrations change, administrators and teachers change, students change, but as long as our alumni stick together, we will survive. What we expect:

#1 The school retain the Shortridge name
#2 The caliber of outstanding students will shift over time
#3 Participation of parents will likely increase
#4 Shortridge again rises to its significant place as one of the best for secondary education

The mission of our alumni association essentially remains the same: we continue to reach out to our alumni to support the students enrolled in the building and educate this new population of the Shortridge legacy and history. We likely would begin an outreach program to educate the IB administrators, parents and students who we are once a firm decision is made.

Are we in favor of Shortridge returning to its former academic excellence glory days? Of course we are, but the primary concern we are left with -- If the IPS School Board and its leaders want Shortridge alumni to continue that level of support, we need to be included in the discussion about the school's future.

The IPS School Board will meet again next Tuesday, November 18, 6pm at the Education Center. If you want to learn first-hand the prospective future of our alma mater, be there, if possible.

More Athletic Department News: Fall Wrap-Up

Football team finished its season 8-3 winning the first round of the Sectional over Indiana School for the Deaf. Shortridge lost in the second round to last year's state champs, Tri-Central in round two of the Sectional.

Volleyball team had a rough season, but was able to make it to the Sectional final, losing to Heritage Christian. The team played much better in the Sectional.

Girls Golf was the IPS Conference Champions with all five players landing All-Conference medals by placing in the top ten individually. The girls placed 5th in the City, the highest place of any of the IPS schools.

Boys cross country was hampered with only one runner. We hope to build more interest in the future for this sport.

SAA Board loses former Decade Rep

  Richard Edyvean, Decade Representative for the '60s for the past 6 years, and brother to SAA Board president, Al Edyvean, lost his battle with cancer recently. Rich was reelected in June at the SAA Annual meeting only to resign his position a couple of months later.

Rich, who formerly lived in Houston, had recently relocated with his family to the Denver area upon his retirement. His illness had not been detected when he was in Indy for the annual meeting in June. (Photo: The courtyard renovation, June 2014)

 Our deepest sympathy to the Edyvean family. Rich was a dedicated member of the SAA Board throughout his tenure.
