150 Celebration Ribbon-Cutting & Brick Sale Campaign Kickoff
Alumni and guests gathered on Saturday, June 7, 2014, for the official ribbon-cutting ceremony to begin the 150th sesqui-centennial school anniversary celebration. Under clear blue skies and mild temperature, the Alumni Association and numerous alumni officially began the year-long calendar of events that will end in June 2015 with a homecoming celebration. Tentatively, a number of events are being considered to recognize Shortridge as the oldest public high school in the state and catalyst for Public Education excellence in the State of Indiana; namely: * Shortridge artifacts will be returned to the school from the Indiana Historical Society for display in the main floor display case at the school. * An all-school convocation for all IPS students in Grades 8-12 * "Homecoming" performance by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra * Visit by a Guest Lecturer * Play: "History of Public Education," presented by Indiana Historical Society * Final event: All-classes reunion and Senior Class Prom for alumni-- Summer 2015 Watch future issues of NewsBriefs for dates and details.
Featured in the Intro Block above, SAA Board Secretary, Joyce (Edwards) Moore, proudly displays a mock-up design of the interior courtyard showcasing strategic areas for future courtyard upgrades. She also participated in the ribbon-cutting photo with Board Vice President of Marketing & Development/Fundraising, Keith Rand, along with an alumna and current student holding the blue and white ribbon and bows. The interior courtyard was beautiful with a recent renovation and landscaping manicure, including tables and colorful umbrellas, bench padding, and new floral plantings, along with water gently flowing from the center fountain. More plans are underway to create a rain garden to help recycle rain water that comes off the building, and planting of other shrubs, plants, trees and flowers that will help to recreate a picturesque living learning model of growing foliage. And the Alumni Association officially began a "Limited Brick Sale" where alumni can purchase a brick, which will be inscribed that surrounds the fountain in center of the courtyard. Proceeds from the brick sale will support the SAA Legacy Scholarship Fund and is fully tax deductible. Each brick is $150 for an individual; to memoralize a deceased family member, or a class may purchase a brick for $1,500 that may include up to 15 class members' names--five names listed per brick. (Additional class bricks may be purchased by the class as desired.)
In the event both husband and wife are alumni, one brick may be purchased for both names and class year(s); up to five lines of text no longer than 14 characters per line may be inscribed on a single brick.
See the attached form for more information. The brick sale will end in June 2015. Click the "Brick Sale" form attached. SAVE the form to your computer, click in the shaded areas and type your information or SAVE, PRINT and complete the blank form to send with your check, payable to Shortridge Alumni Association, or email the electronic form that includes your credit card information to: shortridgealumni@sbcglobal.net. Share the form or our contact information with classmates and friends. Initially, 300 bricks around the courtyard fountain will become the first area inscribed with the commemorative bricks. Be one of the 300 for this special recognition area that will last for generations to come! All Shortridge alumni and supporters are encouraged to "leave your name" as a part of our history and legacy.
WHEN YOU VISIT THE SCHOOL, BE SURE TO CHECK OUT THE COURTYARD OR CONSIDER USING THAT AREA FOR AN INFORMAL GATHERING--A GREAT PLACE FOR A REUNION--IT'S ADJACENT TO THE CAFETERIA, IN CASE OF INCLEMENT WEATHER.
JOIN THE GROWING "BRICK" LIST: Robert Bowen ('57) * Rufus "Bud" Myers ('60) * Joyce (Edwards) Moore ('68) & Justin Moore (Urban Patch) * Katherine "Kathy" McConahay Willing ('59) * Max Schumacher ('50) |

SAA Board of Directors - Annual Meeting & Elections
The Annual Meeting of the Alumni Association on Saturday, June 7, resulted in a review of the association's year of activities, budget and financial review, and support of various projects and programs for students of Shortridge. Marilyn (Chance) Shank, vice president of PR, led the meeting and after referring members to copies of last year's minutes, which were approved pending any corrections, introduced Jarnell Burks-Craig, chair of the 150 Sesquicentennial committee, who announced preliminary plans for the next year to recognize Shortridge as the oldest public high school of the State of Indiana. (See Feature Article). As well, Joyce (Edwards) Moore (Board Secretary) and Keith Rand,( VP of Marketing and Development/Fundraising), shared plans to expand the courtyard renovation project and Limited Brick Sale, which will help fund the Legacy Scholarship Fund.
The Association recognized two Board members whose terms expired at this meeting; namely, Marilyn Shank has exhausted three two-year terms as Vice President of PR and Richard Edyvean, Decade of the 1960s representative. Dee Duff, nominating committee chair, provided the slate for new appointees: Jarnell Burks-Craig was elected as VP of PR; both Shank and Edyvean will begin new terms as Decade of the 1960s representatives. The slate was unanimously accepted by the membership as presented. Currently, the vacated position as Corresponding Secretary again is open for any alumni interested in working on the Board in this position.

The IPS Hall of Fame Luncheon committee will honor five new inductees with event proceeds benefiting IPS Education Foundation programs. Established in 2006, the IPS Hall of Fame has recognized the professional lives of many of its graduates. Shortridge alumni have been inducted into the IPS Hall of Fame more than any other local high school. Since 2006, nearly 20 Shortridge graduates have been honored; 2014 will add two more of the five candidates. The 2014 IPS Hall of Fame inductees are:
* Alice (O'Neal) Dye - Shortridge H.S., Class of 1944
* Phyllis Imel - Washington H.S. - Class of 1953
* Monique Hunt McWilliams - John Marshall H.S. - Class of 1982

The IPS Education Foundation and the honorees will celebrate with a luncheon at 11:00a on September 30 at the Indiana Roof Ballroom. Tickets are available for purchase now at ipsef.org..

Therefore, in 2015, Mrs. Alice Dye, golf course designer (and wife of Pete Dye also a renowned golf course designer worldwide ), will join our HoF honorees along alumni row. Dan Wakefield was inducted independently into the Shortridge HoF in 2013. The complete listing of IPS & Shortridge Hall of Fame inductees is available on our website, www.shortridgealumni.com.
