                   :
With the severe and harsh winter, school closures, ISTEP test preparation (and execution) and spring break, news from the school has been slow coming BUT we're now ready to announce these special announcements and upcoming events

shiny_new_drums.jpg
* SHORTRIDGE WINS STATE INDOOR PERCUSSION CHAMPIONSHIP
The music students rehearsed three nights a week and every Saturday from Thanksgiving to March 15th. The show was based on the music Paranormal by Frank Sullivan, arranged by Joe Tracy.
Shortridge scored an 86.25 for their final performances and won 1st place by 3 points. The group received a large plaque, banner, and each student also received a gold medal.
Senior snare drummer, Ian Gibson said, "I will never forget the memories that we have created as an ensemble, and the history we have made in the process for our school." Congratulations students and Ms. Spangler.

* IPS ARSENAL TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL WINS BOYS' Class 4-A Basketball Championship; PARK TUDOR wins Class 2-A championship.
An  IPS school has not won the high school basketball championship since 1980 (Broad Ripple H.S.); this was Tech's first EVER boys' basketball championship in the school's history. Congratulations to both schools and their respective basketball programs. And one of Tech's senior players was awarded the coveted Arthur L. Trester Award for his strong academics coupled with athletics. That young man plans to attend the University of Kentucky in the fall.
Shortridge's boys' and girls' teams represented the school very well; however, both exited the tournaments very early in the schedule. Good luck next year!

SPRING PROJECTS BEING SCHEDULED:
Joyce L. Moore, SAA secretary, is quite busy getting ready to launch very challenging activities-- UPDATES AND PLANTINGS FOR THE SCHOOL COURTYARD AND ATRIUM (Greenhouse)! Joyce's civic involvement with Urban Patch, a community service project with Butler Tarkington and Fall Creek Gardens Urban Resource Center (FCGURC) have joined forces to beautify their communities and projects at Shortridge. FCGURC and "Cool Ponds"exhibited recently at the 2014 Flower and Patio Show. At end of the show, the plants were donated to be used at Shortridge and other inner city beautification projects. Visit the link: SHS Atrium - https://drive-google.com/folderview?id=OBxs3FR_90TzveG9QSmozVONQdXc&usp=sharing

Some of the vegetable garden and flowering plants will be sold to raise funds to purchase supplies and equipment needed for the atrium; e.g grow lights, watering cans, plant trays, buckets, soil, etc. Others will go to the gardeners at FCG located at 30th and Central.

We need more volunteers to help with landscape planning, planting, care and maintenance schedule of the courtyard and atrium. Thus far, students, parents, and teachers also will be asked to help maintain these two projects along with any other interested volunteers. As the gardens begin to yield, the students can then come up with projects for their fundraising needs.

VOLUNTEERS ALREADY COMMITTED:
This spring we will have a tree planting around the perimeter and in the courtyard, with help from Joe Jarzen of KIB and the Shortridge Class of 1964. The SAA and Keith Rand are working with us to do green permeable paths and dedication bricks for fundraising for the school. Also, Brad Pressler and his crew will help with some of the labor. Mijiza and E. Joyce Moore (another Joyce Moore) will help with inventory, plant watering, and planting. But the more volunteers we have, all of the work won't be left to only a few.

If you would like to help in any regard for the atrium or courtyard beautification projects, contact Joyce Moore at: joyce@urbanpatch.org or by phone: 317-643-0383. If you can't be on hand to help with the everyday duties, we will be happy to accept any donations for supplies for these projects. Send donations payable to: Shortridge Alumni Association c/o 5030 Guion Road, Indianapolis, IN 46254 and mark Courtyard/Atrium project in Memo area.
